Montgomerie to name Ryder Cup assistants in July

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)—European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomeriesays he will not name his assistants for the event until after the British Open.
His American counterpart Corey Pavin announced four assistant captains onWednesday—Paul Goydos, Davis Love III, Tom Lehman and Jeff Sluman—for thecompetition at Celtic Manor in Wales in October.
But Montgomerie said Thursday he is in no hurry to make a decision, saying“my vice captains will not be announced until after the British Open in July.”
Montgomerie said “I want to give everybody the chance first to make theteam.”
Montgomerie was speaking from the Dubai Desert Classic, where he shot a 71in the first round to sit three shots behind the leaders.
