NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pennsylvania, June 29 (Reuters) – TigerWoods said on Tuesday there is no tension between him and hiscaddie, Steve Williams, despite comments made after the U.S.Open that were widely interpreted as critical.
After the final round at Pebble Beach nearly two weeks ago,the world number one said he made three mental mistakes andwent against his instincts. The remarks were widely interpretedby many as critical of Williams.
“There’s no tension there, not at all,” Woods toldreporters ahead of this week’s AT&T National at Aronimink GolfClub. “Do Stevie and I make mistakes on the golf course? Ofcourse we do. We’re not perfect (and) we made mistakes at thewrong time.”
The event will be Woods’s only official tournament betweenthe U.S. Open and next month’s British Open at St Andrews, where he won in 2000 and 2005.
If Woods was upset with his final round at the U.S. Open, where he shot a four-over par 75 to finish three strokes backof Graeme McDowell, so too was big-hitting Dustin Johnson, whosquandered a three-shot lead in the final round.
Johnson had a triple bogey at the second hole that seemedto set the tone for the day as he never recovered and finishedtied for eighth place.
Johnson has received many consoling phone calls since theU.S. Open, including one from Greg Norman, who also suffered aheartbreaking final round collapse when he surrendered asix-stroke lead at the 1996 Masters.
“All you can do is put yourself in a situation to win theU.S. Open and I still finished in the top 10, so it’s not likeI had a terrible week or anything,” said Johnson. “I’ve got totake the positives I can from that week.”
Woods and Johnson are part of a reasonably strong fieldthis week, although many top players are missing, most notablyworld number two Phil Mickelson. (Editing by Frank Pingue; To query or comment on this storyemail sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)
