Golf-’Mickelson expects Tour to get into the groove dispute (Reuters)
January 31, 2010
By Mark Lamport-Stokes
SAN DIEGO, Jan 30 (Reuters) – Phil Mickelson expects thePGA Tour to take action after the world number two was accusedof cheating by fellow American Scott McCarron at this week’sSan Diego Open.
McCarron criticised Mickelson for exploiting a loophole ingolf’s new groove rules by using a 20-year-old Ping wedgeduring the tournament, although the club has been approved forplay.
“We all have our opinions on the matter but a line wascrossed and I was publicly slandered,” Mickelson told reporterson Saturday after carding a two-under-par 70 in the third roundat Torrey Pines.
“Because of that, I’ll have to let other people handle it.”
Asked whether he was considering legal action, Mickelsonreplied: “I’m not sure. I’m not sure. I think the (PGA) Tourwill probably get on top of it.”
McCarron, who missed the second-round cut at Torrey Pines, said earlier this week that three-times major winner Mickelsonwas “taking an unfair advantage of the rules”.
McCarron told Friday’s San Francisco Chronicle: “It’scheating and I’m appalled Phil has put it in play.
“All those guys should be ashamed of themselves for doingthat. As one of our premier players, (Mickelson) should be oneof the guys who steps up and says this is wrong.”
TOP LEVEL
As of Jan. 1, new rules relating to club-face grooves wereimplemented at the top level after research found modernconfigurations could allow players to generate almost as muchspin with irons from the rough as from the fairway.
All clubs, with the exception of drivers and putters, havebeen affected by the change which limits groove volume andgroove-edge sharpness, effectively replacing U-grooves withV-grooves.
McCarron took exception to the Ping-Eye 2 wedge used thisweek by Mickelson, a club with square grooves which is legalbecause of a lawsuit won by its manufacturer over the UnitedStates Golf Association in 1990.
On Thursday, Mickelson agreed with McCarron’s overallstance but took exception at how his compatriot had made hispoint.
“I totally agree with him (McCarron),” Mickelson said. “Ithink it’s a ridiculous rule.
“But it’s not up to me or any other player to interpretwhat the interpretation of the rule is or the spirit of therule. All my clubs are approved for play, and I take that veryseriously not to violate any rule.
“I don’t agree with the way he (McCarron) carried on aboutit, but that’s his choice.” (Editing by John O’Brien; To query or comment on this storyemail sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

Robert Gates wins New Zealand Open
January 30, 2010
QUEENSTOWN, New Zealand (AP)—Robert Gates became the 13th player to win hisNationwide Tour debut, closing with a 2-over 74 on Sunday for a one-strokevictory over Australia’s Andrew Dodt in the tour’s season-opening New ZealandOpen.
Gates, the 6-foot-6 former Texas A&M player who played the Canadian Tourlast year, had a 14-under 274 total at The Hills. He opened with rounds of 65,67 and 68 in the event also sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia.
Gates, three strokes ahead entering the round, had a double bogey on thepar-3 16th to fall into a tie with Dodt at 14 under, but Dodt followed with adouble bogey of his own on the par-5 17th. Dodt birdied the final hole for a 72.
“I didn’t hit really many bad shots at all. I got some bad breaks andthat’s golf,” said Gates, who earned $108,000. “I was fortunate the firstthree rounds to get a lot of great ones. Andrew played an absolutely wonderfulback nine.”
Former Southern California star Jamie Lovemark (68) was third at 12 under.

Mickelson not taking “cheating” accusation lightly
January 30, 2010
SAN DIEGO (AP)—Phil Mickelson is upset about being “publicly slandered” withaccusations of cheating. He is suggesting that unless the U.S. PGA Tour stepsin, he might let others handle it.
Mickelson did not mention Scott McCarron by name in his interviews onSaturday at the Farmers Insurance Open. It was McCarron who was quoted in TheSan Francisco Chronicle as saying about Mickelson using the Ping-Eye 2 wedge,“It’s cheating, and I’m appalled Phil has put it in play.”
Mickelson says he expects the Ping wedges with square grooves, which areapproved because of a legal settlement, to be a topic of discussion. But he sayswhen it leads to a player being slandered, the tour needs to step in—“orsomeone else.”
Asked if he was considering a lawsuit, Mickelson declined to get intospecifics.

Golf-Sim looks for Nationwide inspiration in Torrey title bid (Reuters)
January 30, 2010
By Mark Lamport-Stokes
SAN DIEGO, Jan 30 (Reuters) – Australian Michael Sim aimsto draw on the experience of his golden Nationwide Tourcampaign last year when he bids for victory in Sunday’s finalround of the San Diego Open.
Sim triumphed three times on the PGA Tour’s satellitecircuit in 2009, ending the season as player of the year withrecord earnings of $644,142.
On Saturday, he birdied two of the last three holes atTorrey Pines for a two-under-par 70 and he will go into thelast day two strokes behind the pacesetting Ryuji Imada ofJapan.
“Tomorrow I’m going to try and go out there and just playthe golf course probably until I get to the back nine,” Sim,25, told reporters after posting an 11-under total of 205.
“Par is a very good score out here on this golf course, especially if the wind gets up like it did this afternoon.
“If I can go out there tomorrow and play like I did on theback nine today, I’ve got a really good shot at winning thetournament.”
Asked if his Nationwide Tour experience last year had givenhim an extra jolt of confidence in pursuit of his maiden PGATour victory, Sim replied: “Definitely.
“I’m happy to be out here now. I played last week at theBob Hope (Classic) and played quite well.
“Now I’ve got an opportunity this week to win a golftournament and I’d like to take full opportunity of thattomorrow.”
Sim, the top-ranked amateur in the game in 2005, has notplayed at Torrey Pines since he competed for the Junior WorldChampionship in 2002.
“I think I finished about 30th, but obviously now there area lot more additional tee boxes and it is a lot longer,” saidthe Scotland-born professional whose best PGA Tour finish was atie for seventh at the 2008 Arizona Open.
“You’ve got to hit the ball well and putt well out here. Itis a U.S. Open golf course,” Sim added, referring to the venuefor the 2008 U.S. Open. “It’s very demanding.” (Editing by John O’Brien; To query or comment on this storyemail sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

The Daily Wrap-up, Round 3: Farmers Insurance Open (PGATOUR.com)
January 30, 2010
SAN DIEGO (AP)—Ryuji Imada, a runner-up at Torrey Pines two years ago, has a much better opportunity this time. He won't be starting the final round 12 shots behind, or trying to catch up to Tiger Woods.
Imada avoided the trauma that caught up with so many other contenders Saturday, making only one bogey and escaping with several key pars for a 2-under 70 that gave him a two-shot lead over Ben Crane and Michael Sim in the Farmers Insurance Open.
Imada essentially won the B-Flight two years ago when he closed with a 67 to finish eight shots behind Woods. No matter the score or who's in the field, he obviously has figured out something about the tough South Course at Torrey Pines.
He was at 13-under 203 and will be in the final group with Crane, who had a 69, and Sim, the 25-year-old Australian playing Torrey Pines for the first time since he was a teenager at the Junior World Championship in 2002.
"The score looks pretty solid, but it was a struggle out there," Imada said.
He made a nifty up-and-down from short of the 15th green for one par, saved another par from left of the 16th green, and finished the day with a 35-foot birdie putt that gave him a slightly bigger cushion than he expected.
For so many others, birdies were offset by adventures.
Phil Mickelson lost a ball in a eucalyptus tree and took double bogey, then rallied for a 70 and was four shots behind. U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover made double bogey on one of the easiest par 4s, then followed with four birdies for a 68, leaving him three shots behind going into Sunday.
D.A. Points, who shared the lead with Imada after two rounds, kept pace until he chipped over the 14th green and into the hazard, scrambling for a double bogey. He had a 74, although he was still in the mix.
Ten players were separated by four shots going into the final round, which isn't much on a course that hosted the U.S. Open in 2008.
"You cannot predict what's going to happen in this game, especially on this course," Crane said.
Mickelson would not have predicted seeing a ball get stuck in a tree—two days in a row. On Friday, it happened in his group to Ryan Palmer. This time, it was Lefty who stared up into the eucalyptus tree, even sending a young fan up the tree to help.
"My short game kept me in it," Mickelson said. "I didn't hit the ball the way I've been hitting it coming in. I don't feel like it's far off. But at least I'm in a position now where a good round tomorrow can get it done."

Imada essentially won the B-Flight two years ago when he closed with a 67 tofinish eight shots behind Woods. No matter the score or who’s in the field, heobviously has figured out something about the tough South Course at TorreyPines.
He was at 13-under 203 and will be in the final group with Crane, who had a69, and Sim, the 25-year-old Australian playing Torrey Pines for the first timesince he was a teenager at the Junior World Championship in 2002.
“The score looks pretty solid, but it was a struggle out there,” Imadasaid.
He made a nifty up-and-down from short of the 15th green for one par, savedanother par from left of the 16th green, and finished the day with a 35-footbirdie putt that gave him a slightly bigger cushion than he expected.
For so many others, birdies were offset by adventures.
Phil Mickelson lost a ball in a eucalyptus tree and took double bogey, thenrallied for a 70 and was four shots behind. U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover madedouble bogey on one of the easiest par 4s, then followed with four birdies for a68, leaving him three shots behind going into Sunday.
D.A. Points, who shared the lead with Imada after two rounds, kept paceuntil he chipped over the 14th green and into the hazard, scrambling for adouble bogey. He had a 74, although he was still in the mix.
Ten players were separated by four shots going into the final round, whichisn’t much on a course that hosted the U.S. Open in 2008.
“You cannot predict what’s going to happen in this game, especially on thiscourse,” Crane said.
Mickelson would not have predicted seeing a ball get stuck in a tree—twodays in a row. On Friday, it happened in his group to Ryan Palmer. This time, itwas Lefty who stared up into the eucalyptus tree, even sending a young fan upthe tree to help.
“My short game kept me in it,” Mickelson said. “I didn’t hit the ball theway I’ve been hitting it coming in. I don’t feel like it’s far off. But at leastI’m in a position now where a good round tomorrow can get it done.”

Golf-Imada and Points retain early lead at Torrey Pines (Reuters)
January 30, 2010
By Mark Lamport-Stokes
SAN DIEGO, Jan 30 (Reuters) – Overnight pacesetters RyujiImada of Japan and American DA Points retained a share of thelead midway through Saturday’s third round of the San DiegoOpen.
On another glorious day of sunshine at Torrey Pines, Imadamissed the chance to edge a stroke in front when he narrowlyfailed to sink a birdie putt from eight feet at the par-fiveninth.
That left him with an outward nine of even-par 36 to staylevel with Points, who also covered the front nine in level.
Australians Robert Allenby and Marc Leishman were a furthertwo strokes back in a tie for third at nine under with PGA Tourrookie Matt Every.
Tour veteran Allenby had completed 10 holes, Leishman 11 andEvery nine.
Among the big names, three-times major winner Ernie Els wasthree shots off the pace after 13 holes.
Co-leader overnight, Points slipped back with a bogey at thepar-four first where he missed the fairway off the tee and Imadabriefly moved two shots clear after rolling in a five-footbirdie putt at the third.
FIRST BOGEY
However, Imada recorded his first bogey of the week at thepar-four fourth after driving into a fairway bunker and failingto reach the green in two.
Points then regained a share of the lead with Imada at 11under when he knocked in a birdie putt from seven feet at thepar-five sixth and the pair remained deadlocked at the turn..
Els moved to within two of the lead after covering the frontnine in a sizzling four-under 32 but then slid back withsuccessive bogeys from the par-three 11th where he three-putted.
Three-times winner Mickelson closed to within three of thelead when he rammed in a five-footer to birdie the sixth but hetumbled backwards after losing a ball at the par-four seventh.
The American left-hander pushed his tee shot there well leftand eventually had to declare his ball lost after it ended up ina eucalyptus tree.
A spectator climbed up the tree in a bid to identify wherethe ball was located, but, when that failed, Mickelson trudgedback to the tee to hit his third shot en route to an uglydouble-bogey six. (Editing by Pritha Sarkar; To query or comment on this storyemail sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

School’s in, despite Tiger’s many woes
January 30, 2010
ANAHEIM, California (AP)—Outside the Tiger Woods Learning Center, visitors arewelcomed with a message etched in concrete and another time.
“Tiger,” it says, “thank you for being an adult role model.”
Inside, past a huge bronze sculpture of Woods and his father in the lobby, eager fifth-graders wielding scalpels and tweezers are busy dissecting squid. Inanother classroom, they’re studying marine science.
Every week brings busloads of kids to the sparkling, new center just a fewgood Tiger tee shots from Disneyland. The center’s mission is to help them thinkabout how different classes—which tilt toward math, science and technology—can lead to a career they’d like.

For the time being, it’s business as usual at the 10,668-square meter(35,000 foot) center, set next to a municipal golf course in a working-classneighborhood. The fallout from the scandal that brought down the school’sbenefactor hasn’t intruded, so far, at a place where Woods always believed hedid his best work.
Greg McLaughlin, head of the Tiger Woods Foundation, says the center hasenough financial support to carry on while Woods is on hiatus from golf.
The future is a bit more unsettled, if only because everything about Woodsright now is unsettled. But if McLaughlin is worried, he doesn’t show it.
“We feel pretty confident we’re in a good place right now,” he said. “Wehave a pretty strong financial position which is a tribute to our fundraisingefforts, and I think that will sustain us during Tiger’s indefinite leave.”
While every new day seems to bring a new sighting of Woods and paparazziscramble to get pictures of him and his family, things are decidedly more quietat 1 Tiger Woods Way, where life inside his learning center goes on just as ithas the last few years.
Fifth-graders arrive every morning by bus for their weeklong stay. They seemmore interested in trying to build a rocket or filming a video than they do inthe personal life of the man who made the place possible.
“They haven’t made any comment about it at all,” school director KatherineBihr said.
Woods always seemed destined to become a towering figure in sports, from thetime he appeared on national television as a 2-year-old with a cut-down golfclub to the time he became the first African-American to win the Masters. Withplenty of guidance from his father, Earl, he was equally determined to create alegacy away from the golf course.
Father and son created the Tiger Woods Foundation when he turned pro in1996, and for years it was a constant reminder to Woods that he was making adifference in the lives of kids who wouldn’t know the difference between a9-iron and a putter.
Woods, by most accounts, hasn’t reached out to many people since going intoseclusion. But one of the calls he did make was to assure the foundation he wasnot on a permanent leave of absence.
“He specifically wanted to talk about the foundation and his dedication andcommitment to the kids we served,” McLaughlin said. “I conveyed that to allthe staff and board members.”
Just as important were the calls from donors and sponsors. Like Tiger, theyweren’t bailing, either.
“To the contrary, we’re actually pleased all of our partners are extremelysupportive of our work,” McLaughlin said. “I can’t speculate what might happenin the future, but our partners know the quality of our work.”
How long the Tiger Woods Foundation can continue to fund the learning centerand its other programs at current levels may depend on how long it takes Woodsto rehabilitate his image. Though the foundation has millions in the bank, itsfortunes largely revolve around that of the golfer who started it 14 years ago.
In addition, the foundation likely will have to spend millions on a secondlearning center in Washington that still doesn’t have a site more than two yearsafter it was announced.
Until now, much of the foundation’s money came from events Woods isconnected with, including his own tournament every December near Los Angeles.Chevron signed on as the title sponsor in 2008, declaring it a partnership bornof “shared ideals and commitments.”
The foundation also runs the AT&T National, hosted by Woods in Washington inthe summer. Woods may or may not be playing in the tournament, but the delicatesubject of hosting it was resolved, at least temporarily, when he agreed to laylow this year.
Though AT&T dumped its commercial sponsorship of Woods in the wake of thescandal, the corporation is contracted for the tournament through 2014.
The other two events the foundation relies on for income are the Tiger Jam,an annual concert in Las Vegas, and the food-centric Block Party in SouthernCalifornia. The Tiger Jam, which raises about $1 million a year, would seem tobe most in jeopardy because it is largely dependent on both its host and thewillingness of star music acts to appear with him for the benefit.
“It’s our intent to have a 13th Tiger Jam in 2010,” McLaughlin said.“We’re still working on trying to find a date that would work. It’s alwaysdriven by finding an artist able to perform.”
Though the tournaments and events generate plenty of money, they’re notexactly cash cows for the Woods foundation. According to International RevenueService forms filed for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2008, they took in$36.2 million but cost $32.7 million to produce.
And while Woods has talked of reaching millions of children with his charityefforts, his foundation is relatively small compared with others. Amongsports-related charities alone, the Tiger Woods Foundation ranked 15th on a listcompiled by the nonprofit Foundation Center, just ahead of Henry Aaron’s ChasingThe Dream Foundation.
McLaughlin says the foundation and its related entities have assets of about$99 million. Last year, $4.7 million was spent to run the learning center and$2.8 million was distributed as scholarships and grants to different charitiesand organizations. Figures filed on IRS 990 returns are somewhat lower for ayear earlier, listing assets of $75 million and spending of about $6 million.
The foundation was hit that year by big losses in the stock market, something not unique to Woods’ charity. But the market has rebounded and the twotournaments should provide a steady stream of income at least for the nearfuture. The foundation, meanwhile, still has considerable liquid assets and, even if donations dried up, Woods himself has deep pockets.
Even before Woods became embroiled in a sex scandal, not everyone shared theview that he was doing all he could to help disadvantaged children. Hall of Famerunning back Jim Brown contended last year that Woods “gets away with teachingkids to play golf, and that’s his contribution” to society.
But almost every fifth-grader in Anaheim goes through the learning center, and most have never picked up a golf club. And while the driving range isprominent, the focus is more on science and careers than drivers.
The head of the Anaheim City School District says he’s grateful for thecenter, saying the 20,000 or so kids it has touched in its short existence faroutweighs anything Woods may have done in his personal life.
“Having a resource like the Tiger Woods Learning Center is justincredible,” superintendent Jose Banda said. “It comes down to money, especially with budgets the way they are. The stuff they have is state of theart and expensive stuff.”
On a recent morning, the driving range out the back door was empty. Duringbreaks, the fifth-graders are likelier to be kicking a soccer ball than hittinggolf balls.
This class is mostly Hispanic, and nearly all are from low-income families.Ask if they know who Tiger Woods is, and they’re quick with a response.
“He’s a professional golfer,” one says.
Ask what else they know about Woods and you get little more than a shrug ora smile. If they’ve heard whispers from their parents or watched things on TV,they don’t let on.
McLaughlin, who has known Woods since he offered him an exemption into theLos Angeles Open as a teenager, admits he was initially blindsided by the wholescandal.
“I wasn’t aware of any of the indiscretions that became known, but I cantell you Tiger is a good person and someone I’ve known a long time,” McLaughlinsaid. “What I’ve seen over 20 years seeing his commitment to kids and thefoundation is undeniable.”
Not only will Woods’ charities survive and thrive, McLaughlin maintains, buthis legacy will someday change. He’s convinced there is a higher calling forWoods, one that will someday outweigh his current troubles.
“When his obituary is written, it will say here’s an individual who made atremendous contribution to society,” he said. “When that time comes peoplewill realize what he’s done for millions of kids. You have to think thatultimately this will be a big part of how people view him in life.”

Golf-Casey fires 66 to share Doha lead with Dredge (Reuters)
January 30, 2010
By Bernie McGuire
DOHA, Jan 30 (Reuters) – Paul Casey fired a sublime 66 tograb a share of the lead with fellow Briton Bradley Dredge inthe third round of the Qatar Masters on Saturday.
Casey, five shots off the pace on Friday, carded sevenbirdies and a bogey to finish the round on 10-under-par 206.
Dredge survived a double bogey on the fifth by hitting fivebirdies to score 70 as he and Casey opened up a one shot leadgoing into Sunday’s final round.
England’s Lee Westwood was forced to change his drivermid-round after it cracked but kept his focus to card a 70. Helies third on nine under par.
Sweden’s Robert Karlsson (70) and overnight leaderAustralia’s Brett Rumford (73) were a further shot adrift.
Casey was especially delighted with his round of 66 as hehad missed the Doha cut in all three of his previousappearances.
“This is my best round around this golf course in four yearsof trying, so I can’t say a bad thing about it.”
But while he was pleased to top the leaderboard, Casey saidhe had not regained full fitness after being sidelined late lastyear with a rib injury.
“I’ll go 95, which is almost 100, isn’t it?” he asked.
“The only thing I feel right now is tightness in the backbut it’s been a good test this week because the rough is thick.
“The only reason it’s 95 percent is I don’t feel I’ve gotcomplete range of motion back yet but I haven’t held back on anyshot.
“I’ll give it another couple of weeks and there’s no reasonwhy I can’t be 100 percent.”
Welshman Dredge is looking to snap a three-year barren runand is hoping his Dubai run will also improve his chances oflanding a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team.
“To play in the Ryder Cup in Wales is a once in a lifetimeopportunity, for all of the Welsh guys, not just myself, withthe Ryder Cup being in Wales,” he said.
“I want to perform my best this year and give myself achance.”
Dredge added his decision to train during the off season inSpain is now paying off with his promising run in the MiddleEast.
“I would normally take four weeks off over the winter, sothis year I took two weeks off where I didn’t touch a club,” hesaid.
“I spent the other two weeks practising on my game in Spainas I was very aware that I wanted to come into these events withmy game as good as it could possibly could be.”
Westwood was aware something was wrong with his driver whenhis downwind tee shot at the 10th hole carried some 270-yardsinstead of the expected 300 yards.
He still birdied the 10th and 11th holes before calling fora rules official to inspect his driver and was given permissionto replace the damaged club.
“It’s not the sort of situation you want thrown at youcoming down the few closing holes where if you are looking tomake a few birdies, and you could have a two-shot or a threeshot lead,” said Westwood, who lost his way slightly with abogey in the 15th.
“It’s just unfortunate because I really liked that driver.
“But then I am only one shot behind, so it’s a good positionto be in.”
