Tiger Woods accepts full blame for car crash (Reuters)

WINDERMERE, Fla., Nov 29 (Reuters) – Golf star Tiger Woodson Sunday accepted full responsibility for the car accidentthat took place outside his Florida home but said he wanted tokeep the details surrounding the incident private.

The world’s top golfer hit a fire hydrant and tree as hepulled his Cadillac Escalade out of the driveway of his houseat around 2:25 a.m. EST (0725 GMT) on Friday, the FloridaHighway Patrol said.

Woods was taken to the hospital with injuries andreleased.

“This situation is my fault and it’s obviously embarrassingto my family and me,” Woods, 33, said on his official website(http://web.tigerwoods.com).

“I’m human and I’m not perfect. I will certainly make surethis doesn’t happen again.

“This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way.Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false,unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulatingabout my family and me are irresponsible.”

For 3rd time, Woods cancels meeting with police

WINDERMERE, Fla. (AP)—Tiger Woods says the car crash that sent him to thehospital is his fault and has become embarrassing to him and his family, but heplans to keep it a private matter.

In a statement posted Sunday on his Web site about an hour before he wasmeet with troopers, Woods says his wife, Elin, acted “courageously” when shesaw that he was hurt. He says any other assertion is “absolutely false.”

Tiger’s unwelcome slam (Yahoo! Sports)

The police keep trying to show up at Tiger Woods’ house and they keep getting shooed away. The Florida Highway Patrol is being treated like nearly everyone else seeking a private word with Woods through the years: No way, no how, no comment.

Woods won’t be required to speak to officers following Friday’s car accident. He just needs to provide his driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance. It’s unlikely he does more than what’s required; Woods’ ample legal team knows the stakes are high. It’s not the crime, after all; it’s the cover-up.

Woods has long been the dullest celebrity in the world. With an early-morning, low-speed, single-car, end-of-the-driveway accident, though, he’s now in the middle of a cauldron of intrigue, heated by all the usual tabloid ingredients – money, fame, sex, mystery.

If he does speak to the police, it will be a jarring experience for someone who is fiercely private and obsessed with control. No one tells Tiger Woods what to do, with whom to speak and what questions to answer; at least not since he thrilled the golf world by winning the Masters at age 21.

It was the start of a legendary career that has him on the brink of billionaire status for swinging a golf club better than anyone on earth.

He has more handlers and yes men than you can count. Anyone who’s ever broken his privacy demands has been summarily fired – from lawyers to his first caddie.

Early Friday morning, though, Woods’ tranquil world was shattered along with the back window of his Cadillac Escalade. At 2:25 a.m. he tried to depart his home in a gated community outside of Orlando and managed an almost impossible driving trajectory – a 120-degree turn – and wound up hitting a fire hydrant and a neighbor’s tree.

As one person mentioned to me on Twitter: “He was a mailbox and a parked car away from the Tiger Slam.”

And that’s where this story has gone – to comedy. Once the initial report that Woods was in “serious condition” became nothing big, just some facial cuts and an apparent lapse of consciousness, this morphed into America’s favorite pastime, mocking the rich and famous.

Tiger’s driving has always been erratic, hasn’t it?

Post-crash Tiger slammed his steering wheel against the ground and blamed a photographer for snapping a picture in mid-lane change.

And so on.

The basis of the speculation is pretty simple. On Wednesday the National Enquirer published a story saying Tiger was messing around outside his wedding vows. The mainstream media mostly ignored it, but then suddenly Tiger was in a wreck very late the next night.

The timing was impossible to ignore. This isn’t John Daly smashing a car as he pulled out of an Arkansas Hooters. This is Tiger Woods. Nothing ever happens with Tiger Woods.

“I think Elin and I have avoided a lot of media attention because we’re kind of boring,” Woods once wrote on his website. And it’s true. They mostly sit around their mammoth home behind the high brick walls and play with their two kids or watch movies. For a big adventure Tiger may go to a NBA game or drive his oversized boat – his first one was named “Privacy.”

An early-morning car wreck involving Tiger was completely out of character.

Look, even if the tabloid is wrong – the other woman in question has vehemently denied the affair, Woods hasn’t commented – you’d have to figure it was, at the very least, a topic of conversation around the Thanksgiving table, right?

A husband gets called out for an affair in a supermarket tabloid and it’s going to be discussed. In detail. Probably over and over.

And so questions are raised over the wreck and the bloody lip and how anyone could drive so poorly to cause an accident like Woods did. To pull out of his driveway and wind up where his Escalade did requires either a purposeful track or a wild swerve. He didn’t just lose control of the wheel for a second.

And since police reports claim the airbags didn’t deploy and he was going less than 33 miles an hour, it would seem he had plenty of time to avoid hitting two separate things on the wrong side of the road.

Then there was Elin’s supposed heroic save-her-husband act. According to the police report, she heard the accident from the house. She says she ran out and found her husband injured behind the wheel.

She could’ve called police or the community’s private security firm – which was about 30 seconds away.

If she wanted to help Tiger out of the car – even though it wasn’t on fire and waiting for the paramedics is generally the best policy – she could’ve just opened the door and pulled him out. Pictures of the SUV show minimal damage past the grille, not surprising since an Escalade is a massive vehicle. It’s highly unlikely the doors were wedged shut.

If the door was simply locked, she could’ve gone and gotten a spare set of keys and opened it. She could’ve done a million things.

What she claimed to police she did was go get a golf club and smash in the back window of the SUV so she could, apparently, drag her unconscious 190-pound husband over two rows of seats, shards of glass and out a window – a task best suited for a World’s Strongest Man competition.

And that’s where this went from plausibly innocent to the conversation du jour around the country.

A married man. A tabloid mistress. A potentially scorned wife smashing the windows of his car.

Tiger Woods is a country music song.

Woods’ nature is to never speak of this incident. As long as there isn’t going to be a divorce, no news needs to seep out. For what it’s worth, Tiger is still in the house, although we don’t know if he’s sleeping in his bed or one of the 37 guest rooms.

He’s no doubt thought about skipping his tournament in Los Angeles this week, citing injuries from the crash. He won’t reappear in public until late January at a tournament outside San Diego. He can give one interview to a sympathetic media member who is under stern orders not to press anything and then claim he’s done discussing the situation.

He might crack a bad driving joke before the Masters, reminding everyone what a likeable guy he is.

And that will be that; which is his right. All the public-relations spin doctors are clamoring that he needs to address this, but what good will that do? It’s not golf related. It won’t affect his marketability too much, and even if it did, does he really need more money? Maybe he makes $50 million next year rather than $100 million.

He’s a golfer, not a moral-crusading politician. Saying nothing may not convince people who suspect this was a wild marital incident – TMZ.com is reporting some of Woods’ injuries came from Elin, not the car crash – but no amount of explaining will do that.

People are going to believe what they want. He’s a cad. She clubbed him. Whatever. It’s too late for damage control now.

The only problem is those pesky cops. No one likes being lied to, but the police can do something about it. Unless Elin’s unbelievable story is somehow true, then this gets a little tricky.

Let’s say this was as crazy as you can dream up. I wouldn’t blame Elin or Tiger, in the heat of the moment, from trying to concoct a story that made it sound a little more innocent. Other than the fire hydrant, there’s no aggrieved party here. No crime was committed – unless you want to stick Tiger with driving without a seat belt.

They should be able to move on.

The police may see it differently.

So what does and doesn’t get explained to investigators – comments that will become public via the police report and could cause further legal headaches – is paramount.

Which is why you can’t blame Tiger and Elin for delaying the interview a couple of days, or indefinitely, if possible.

As much as America wants to know the truth, it’s their life, perfect or not. I’d be stunned if Tiger didn’t just politely hand over his information, lawyer up and deal with whatever he needs to deal with in his typical manner – privately.

Woods expected to talk to police Sunday

WINDERMERE, Fla. (AP)—Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin, are expected to talk topolice for the first time Sunday, breaking a two-day silence that has onlyfueled speculation about his early morning accident, why he left the house atthat hour, where he was going and whether an argument preceded the crash.

Sunday could deliver two bits of information—what the world’s No. 1 golferhas to say about the accident or perhaps the 911 tapes that the Florida HighwayPatrol said it would release once authorities have reviewed the call.

In its initial accident report, the patrol said Woods left his house, ranover a fire hydrant with his Cadillac Escalade and then smashed into a tree at2:25 a.m. Friday. And Windermere police chief Daniel Saylor said Woods’ wifetold officers she heard the crash from inside their home, and used a golf clubto break out the back window.

The FHP continues to investigate the crash as a traffic accident, refusingto get caught up in rumors.

Sgt. Kim Montes, the patrol spokeswoman, said Woods is not required to givea statement, only his driver’s license, insurance and registration of the SUV,which was towed to a private yard with damage to the front and both back-seatwindows broken.

“We still are going to move forward with our crash investigation,” shesaid.

Police first tried to interview Woods on Friday, only for his wife to ask ifthey could return the next day because he was sleeping.

As they headed to Woods’ $2.4 million house inside the gates of Isleworth onSaturday afternoon, FHP dispatch put through a phone call to troopers fromWoods’ agent, informing them that Woods and his wife would be unavailable totalk until Sunday.

“I don’t know what was said,” Montes said Saturday. “I mean, (Friday) weunderstood, and that’s kind of normal. It is unusual that we haven’t gotten astatement. This just delays us to getting closer to the completion of theinvestigation.”

Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, did not respond to a text message asking whyWoods was unavailable.

“Every 10 seconds these days, people update their tweets,” said DavidSchwab, vice president of sports marketing firm Octagon. “People are justadding speculation and controversy. You need something to settle the ship. Ifhe’s not able to do it, find someone to do it for him.”

Woods’ news conference for the Chevron World Challenge, the tournament hehosts that benefits his foundation, had been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.It’s unclear whether he would still play, or even attend the event in ThousandOaks, Calif.

“We do not know if Tiger is playing; we are anticipating a great week ofcompetition,” said Greg McLaughlin, the tournament director and president ofhis foundation.

In a telephone interview, Woods’ father-in-law, radio journalist ThomasNordegren, told The Associated Press in Stockholm that he would not discuss theaccident.

“I haven’t spoken to her in the last few … ” Nordegren said about hisdaughter, Elin, before cutting himself off. “I don’t want to go into that.”

Woods’ mother-in-law Barbro Holmberg also refused to address the matter.

“She doesn’t want to comment on private issues like these,” Holmberg’sspokeswoman Eva Malmborg said.

Aside from occasional criticism of his temper inside the ropes, Woods haskept himself out of the news beyond his sport. In an October posting on hisFacebook account, Woods wrote, “I’m asked why people don’t often see me andElin in gossip magazines or tabloids. I think we’ve avoided a lot of mediaattention because we’re kind of boring. …”

“He’s an iconic brand, the platinum standard,” said John Rowady, presidentof rEvolution, a Chicago-based sports marketing agency. “I find it interestinghow he’s being attacked by so many sides after how gracious he’s been. But eventhe best of celebrities who try to do their best can be riddled withcontroversy.”

The waiting continues with Woods

WINDERMERE, Fla. (AP)—The mystery over Tiger Woods’ car crash intensifiedSaturday when his agent called state troopers on their way to Woods’ house andasked them to wait another day before speaking to him.

It was the second straight day Woods was unavailable to talk. His wife toldtroopers on Friday afternoon, after the world’s No. 1 golfer had been treatedand released from a hospital, that he was sleeping and asked that they returnSaturday.

Woods is not required by law to speak to the Florida Highway Patrol becauseit is being investigated as a traffic accident, spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montessaid.

Woods was injured when his Cadillac SUV struck a fire hydrant and a treejust beyond his driveway at 2:25 a.m. Friday. Police said his lips were cut andblood was in his mouth when officers arrived. Police chief Daniel Saylor saidWoods’ wife, Elin, smashed the back window with a golf club to help get him out.

Montes said troopers were en route to Woods’ $2.4 million mansion in thegated community of Isleworth when agent Mark Steinberg called dispatch and wasput through to the troopers, telling them Woods and his wife were unavailable.

“I don’t know what was said,” Montes said.

Steinberg did not immediately respond to a text message seeking comment.

With so many questions lingering—where was he going at that hour?—andrumors circulating on the Internet, one marketing expert said silence was onlystirring the pot.

“Every 10 seconds these days, people update their tweets,” said DavidSchwab, vice president of Octagon. “People are just adding speculation andcontroversy. You need something to settle the ship. If he’s not able to do it,find someone to do it for him.”

Montes said it was “kind of normal” for Woods not to speak on Friday, theday he was treated and released from a hospital.

“It is unusual that we haven’t gotten a statement,” she said. “This justdelays us to getting closer to the completion of the investigation.”

She said troopers inside the gates “are looking for other things for theirinvestigation,” and for now, that pertains only to a traffic accident. Montessaid Woods is not required to give a statement, only his driver’s license,insurance and registration.

“We still are going to move forward with our crash investigation,” Montessaid.

The 911 tapes of the crash could be released as early as Sunday.

More than two dozen media and a cluster of TV trucks were camped outside thegates of Isleworth, an exclusive subdivision near Orlando that’s set on anArnold Palmer-designed golf course and a chain of small lakes, on Saturday,watching for any developments. Even a couple of tourists stopped by and tookpictures.

“We do not know if Tiger is playing; we are anticipating a great week ofcompetition,” said Greg McLaughlin, the tournament director and president ofhis foundation.

In a telephone interview, Woods’ father-in-law, radio journalist ThomasNordegren, told The Associated Press in Stockholm that he would not discuss theaccident.

“I haven’t spoken to her in the last few … ” Nordegren said about hisdaughter, Elin, before cutting himself off. “I don’t want to go into that.”

Woods’ mother-in-law Barbro Holmberg also refused to address the matter.

Roger Federer, who has become close with Woods in recent years, said afterlosing in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals in London, “I haven’tspoken to him. I heard it’s not too serious, which is a good thing.”

Woods has shared precious little about his private life during his dominanceof golf, which has brought him 82 victories around the world and 14 majorchampionships, second only to the 18 professional majors won by Jack Nicklaus.

His endorsements—Nike, AT&T, Accenture, Gillette, Gatorade—have helpedmake him the first athlete to top $1 billion in earnings.

Aside from occasional criticism of his temper inside the ropes, he has kepthimself out of the news outside his sport. In an October posting on his Facebookaccount, Woods wrote, “I’m asked why people don’t often see me and Elin ingossip magazines or tabloids. I think we’ve avoided a lot of media attentionbecause we’re kind of boring. …”

Rowady said Woods has solid relationship with his sponsors, and they are notlikely to drop him over what is known so far.

“Here’s a guy that has a squeaky clean record,” Rowady said. “He leadsthe king’s life and everybody admires him. It’s a personal matter, but hisability to come out and talk about it will be interesting. I’m sure he has a lotof pressure on him and is trying to avoid the rumors.”

Nordegren, a former model from Sweden who once worked as a nanny for golferJesper Parnevik, is as private as Woods. She keeps a low profile at tournaments,watching her husband from behind the ropes, and moves on when photographersstart taking her picture.

Asked at a Friday evening news conference if the couple could have beenarguing, Saylor said he had no knowledge of that.

The accident came two days after the National Enquirer published a storyalleging that Woods had been seeing a New York night club hostess, and that theyrecently were together in Melbourne, where Woods competed in the AustralianMasters.

The woman, Rachel Uchitel, denied having an affair with Woods when contactedby the AP.

“I resent my reputation is getting completely blasted in the media,” shesaid during a telephone interview late Friday. “Everyone is assuming I came outand said this. This is not a story I have anything to do with.”

Uchitel said she was in Melbourne two weeks ago with clients and never sawWoods the entire time she was there.

“The story stands for itself,” National Enquirer executive editor BarryLevine told the AP on Saturday.

Golf-Molinaris hope World Cup triumph will boost Italian game (Reuters)

SHENZHEN, China, Nov 29 (Reuters) – The Molinari brothersare confident their triumph at the 55th World Cup on Sunday willboost the game in Italy but they know golf is not going toovertake soccer in the popularity stakes any time soon.

The siblings shot a final round four-under-par 68, theirworst score of the week, to beat strong Ireland and Sweden teamsat Mission Hills and win Italy the John Jay Hopkins trophy forthe first time.

“It’s not going to be easy to overtake football, but I think(our win) is going to be big obviously because any World Cup inany sport is really big,” said Francesco.

“Hopefully the game is growing a bit more now … and Ithink it will definitely help to grow the number of golfers.”

The victory in their third World Cup together capped asuccessful year for both brothers.

The 27-year-old Francesco had seven top 10 finishes on theEuropean Tour and broke into the world top 50 for the firsttime.

Former U.S. Amateur champion Edoardo claimed three titles onEurope’s junior circuit to become Challenger Tour champion andwon the $2.5 million Dunlop Phoenix in Japan last week.

Costantino Rocca, who racked up five European Tour wins andfinished second at the 1995 British Open, remains theircountry’s most successful player.

“Probably Costantino almost winning the Open and winning theRyder Cup, it’s maybe a bit higher up than us,” said the 2006Italian Open champion Francesco.

“But I think we are just below that and it feels amazing.”

Rocca helped Europe to Ryder Cup victories in 1995 and 1997and after showing what a great partnership they made this weekthe brothers do harbour faint hopes of making ColinMontgomerie’s team for Celtic Manor next year.

“I think it’s pretty much for both of us to keep improvingthe world rankings and the European rankings and maybe have alittle thought on the Ryder Cup,” Francesco said. “But it’sgoing to be really, really hard to make the team.”

Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, who had led allweek after an opening 58, carded an error-strewn 70 to sharesecond with defending champion Swedes Henrik Stenson and RobertKarlsson, who shot a 69.

Edoardo leapt around the 18th green after securing victorywith a two-foot par putt before embracing his younger brother— the first siblings to lift the John Jay Hopkins trophy inthe 55 versions of the event.

“It’s amazing, we don’t really have any words,” 27-year-oldFrancesco, who will share a cheque for $1.7 million with hisbrother, said in a greenside TV interview.

“It’s been really tough all day, we were playing againstsome of the best golfers in the world. It was really toughuntil the last green. But it’s even better when it’s likethis.”

Ireland had started the final day foursomes with a one-shotcushion but were drawn into the chasing pack when world number10 McIlroy went into the trees with his drive at the third.

The Ulstermen looked to have recovered their nerves,however, with a string of four birdies from the fourth to surgethree shots clear.

Sweden, who shot a final-round 63 to win last year, hadpicked up two shots before dropping their first and only shotof the tournament at the eighth.

Calamity struck for the Irish around the turn, however,when they chalked up two more bogeys at the eighth and 10thholes, the latter when McIlroy missed a two-foot par putt.

ITALIANS AHEAD

The Molinaris, meanwhile, had gone through 10 holes at asteady one-under before three successive birdie putts fromFrancesco, the second a curling beauty from 30 feet, broke thethree-way tie then put the Italians ahead by two.

The Swedes and Irish cut the lead to one shot with birdiesat the 15th and there was more drama at the 18th.

Francesco had seven top 10s finishes on the European Tourthis year, while his brother Edoardo, the 2005 U.S. Amateurchampion, was the Challenge Tour champion.

After his victory in a playoff over Karlsson at the DunlopPhoenix in Japan last week, 28-year-old Edoardo has now wonfour of his last six tournaments.

Molinaris give Italy first World Cup title

SHENZHEN, China (AP)—Brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari gave Italy itsfirst victory in the World Cup of Golf, beating Sweden and Ireland by a strokeSunday.

The Molinari brothers shot a 4-under 68 in the alternate-shot final round atthe Mission Hills’ club, finishing at 29 under.
