Sluman (69), Brad Bryant (67) and Russ Cochran (66) were 9 under.
Season points leader Loren Roberts struggled most of the afternoon and hadfive bogeys en route to a 73 that dropped him into a tie for 25th at 1 under.
Bernhard Langer, who began the tournament in third place behind Roberts, hada 65 to move into a tie for seventh at 7 under. Jay Haas (68) was 5 under, andFred Funk (69) followed at 4 under. The four are the only players left incontention to win the $1 million annuity.
Cook shot a 68 on Thursday, then opened the second round with three straightbirdies to move ahead of Blackmar for the early lead. After two pars, Cook madeconsecutive birdies on the par-4 sixth hole and the par-3 seventh to move threestrokes ahead at 9 under.
But Watson, the 60-year-old Hall of Famer, pulled within range with threestraight birdies. Playing two groups ahead of Cook, Watson moved to 10 underwith a birdie on the 587-yard, par-5 13th, then hit a soft 7-iron within 12 feetof the pin on the 18th and made the putt for another birdie.
That left Watson temporarily tied with Cook atop the leaderboard but thatchanged before Watson could finish signing autographs outside the scorer’s tent.
Cook, who was just 1 under on the back nine during the first round, birdiedthe par-5 16th then closed with short birdie putts on 17 and 18.
Before Cook and Watson shot to the top of the leaderboard, Langer was makinghis push toward the top after opening the tournament with a disappointing 72.Langer stayed at even par early then birdied seven of his final nine holes, including the final four.
With Roberts struggling for the second straight day, Langer was in goodshape to become just the second player to overtake the points leader for thetitle during the season-ending tournament. Langer is 348 points behind Roberts, and Haas is 602 back. The players will receive a point for every $500 earned, making a victory worth 884.
Langer leads the tour with four victories and $2,033,451. Roberts, athree-time winner, is second on the money list with $1,854,613.

White, Thompson lead Senior PGA Professional
October 30, 2009
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP)—Jim White shot a 6-under 66 on Friday on the DyeCourse for a share of the second-round lead with Kim Thompson in the Senior PGAProfessional National Championship at PGA Golf Club.
The low 35 finishers will qualify for the 2010 Senior PGA Championship inMay at Colorado Golf Club near Denver.
Thompson had a 67 on the Wanamaker Course to match White at 9-under 135.
White, from Lincoln, Neb., won the 2004 tournament.
“It was one of those days. I hit a lot of great shots, made a few puttswhen I needed to, and got it close a bunch of times,” White said.
“Every year in this tournament you get older and the field gets younger. The hard part is you see more and more good players every year. You come hereand you can’t let your guard down. This field is amazing.”
Thompson, from Salt Lake City, won the 1992 PGA Assistant championship.
“I really putted and chipped well today,” Thompson said. “During the hardpart of the round I chipped it in for eagle on No. 7, when the wind was blowing, and then birdied No. 8. I had it going.”
Mickey Yokoi, the associate head coach for Arizona State’s men’s golf team, was a stroke back after a 70 on the Dye Course.
“I really have not played one round of golf since the end of July orbeginning of August,” said Yokoi, who made it into the tournament as analternate out of the Southwest PGA Section. “When I did not qualify from mysection I started working with my players at Arizona State. I didn’t really havetime to play.”
The final two rounds will be played on the Wanamaker Course.

Viking Classic postponed at least until Sunday
October 30, 2009
MADISON, Miss. (AP)—PGA Tour officials have postponed the Viking Classic untilat least Sunday and will evaluate the course Saturday before making a decisionon when or if the tournament will be held.
Heavy rain this week has left standing water and tracts of mud all over thecourse. Officials said in a late afternoon news conference that they didn’t wantto speculate on what could be done with the tournament.
Earlier in the day, though, they said possibilities include postponing thefull event until next week or weekend, shortening it to 36 holes and starting itmidweek, or outright cancellation.
That final choice seemed to grow more likely as a fresh round ofthunderstorms drenched central Mississippi on Friday.

“It’s just a mess,” said Slugger White, the PGA Tour’s vice president forrules and competition. “If we get this rain (today), I don’t know when thisplace will dry.”
Shortly after White spoke Friday morning, temperatures dropped 15 degreesand heavy rain began to fall as a cold front moved through the area. It issupposed to start clearing Saturday, but that doesn’t mean Annandale Golf Clubwill have a course that’s ready to play.
It’s already saturated after two months of steady rain, and players reportedstanding water and large areas of mud.
Weather hasn’t forced the cancellation of a PGA Tour event since April 1991in Houston. And officials haven’t had to postpone consecutive rounds since thefirst two days of the 2005 BellSouth Classic, which was scaled back to 54 holes.
The fairways at Annandale are so waterlogged, White said six to seven holeswould have to be shortened from par 4s to par 3s because of fairway conditions.
The tournament could be moved to next weekend or rescheduled, White said, but that ruling would have to come from commissioner Tim Finchem.
It’s an important event for several players fighting to get inside the top125 on the money list and keep their exempt status for next year. There’s onlyone more Fall Series tournament left after the Viking Classic.
Among those is Rickie Fowler, the 20-year-old who lost in a three-manplayoff in Arizona last week at the Frys.com Open and is trying to earn enoughmoney to avoid going to Q-school. Fowler got into the Viking Classic based onhis top-10 finish last week.
White said Friday night that if the Viking Classic were canceled orrescheduled, Fowler and Jamie Lovemark—who also was part of the playoff lastweek—would be able to use their top 10 to get into Disney, the final FallSeries event.
Lovemark could not use his exemption this week because he had to go throughthe first stage of Q-school, where he easily advanced on Friday in NorthCarolina.

Golf-Spectacular three-wood seals Kim’s semi-final slot (Reuters)
October 30, 2009
* American denies Strange with last-hole wonder shot
* Allenby, Cabrera and Fisher also reach semis
By Norman Dabell
CASARES, Spain, Oct 30 (Reuters) – Anthony Kim’s dramaticfinishing flourish on Friday sent the American into the lastfour of the World Match Play Championship.
Kim will be joined in Saturday’s 36-hole semi-finals atFinca Cortesin by Australian Robert Allenby, U.S. Masterschampion Angel Cabrera and Briton Ross Fisher.
Scott Strange birdied six of the first eight holes on theway to a three-hole victory over Kim that left the Australianagonisingly one hole short of winning their round-robin group.
The difference was down to the 18th. Four down after missinga two-foot putt on 16, Kim looked out.
The American though produced the shot of the week at thepar-five last when his three-wood from 274 yards finished fourfeet from the pin.
When Strange took four to find the green he conceded Kim’seagle putt and his place in the semi-finals.
“I ran into a buzz-saw today and it was pretty tough to hangin there,” Ryder Cup player Kim told reporters. “I hadn’t playedbadly … and I was three down.
“I found something on 18 when I needed to. When Scott laidup I knew I was going to have to go for it. The club was justthe right number.”
Kim now plays Allenby, the player who criticised him forstaying out late before their recent Presidents Cup singles.
“I’ll be in bed by 9.30,” joked the American.
Allenby’s two-hole win over Briton Oliver Wilson left himthe only undefeated player in the field.
TOUGH GIG
“Tomorrow will be a tough gig against Anthony but it doesn’tmatter who you are up against, you have to play your best golf, and I have done so far,” said the Australian.
Compatriot Geoff Ogilvy declined his spot here to play inthe Singapore Open instead, letting in Allenby.
“I’ll be raising a glass to Geoff especially if the next twodays go well,” added Allenby.
Cabrera’s power proved too much for Briton Simon Dyson as heromped home by seven holes to win his group.
The Argentine has decided to compete in next week’s WorldGolf Championship event in Shanghai to ensure he plays therequisite 12 European Tour events to qualify for the Dubai WorldChampionship in November.
This week proved a disappointing one for the top four in theRace to Dubai money-list as Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, RoryMcIlroy and Paul Casey went out.
Fisher can leap from seventh to fourth on the money-list ifhe wins on Sunday, after his one-hole defeat of India’s JeevMilkha Singh took the Englishman through.
“The Race to Dubai is huge and I’m a bit behind so it’sgreat for me to get into the semis,” said Fisher.
“It can be even better if I can now play 72 holes offlawless golf.”

Golf-Westwood beats Fisher to keep semi-final hopes alive (Reuters)
October 30, 2009
By Norman Dabell
CASARES, Spain, Oct 30 (Reuters) – Europe’s order of meritleader Lee Westwood gave himself a chance of making the WorldMatchplay Championship semi-finals by overcoming fellow BritonRoss Fisher on Friday.
Westwood’s chance is a slim one following his crushingsix-hole defeat on Thursday to Jeev Milkha Singh. The 2000winner of the event needs an overwhelming win himself in hisafternoon encounter with Colombian Camilo Villegas.
“First and foremost I’ve got to win but I do need to winwell,” Westwood told Reuters after his two hole success againstFisher. “If Ross and Jeev only half then I’m through.
“I shouldn’t be relying on other results, though. I putmyself behind the eight-ball by losing so heavily yesterday. Ican’t remember the last time I didn’t make one birdie in around.”
Westwood set up his victory with a run of three birdies andan eagle from the second after his opponent had birdied thefirst, but lessened his margin of victory by losing the 18th.
In the group, Westwood, Villegas, who beat Singh by threeholes, Singh and Fisher are all on two points after a winapiece.
The other group due to play two matches on Friday is equallywide-open. With U.S. Masters champion Angel Cabrera of Argentinalosing by two holes to Swedish world number seven Henrik Stensonand Europe’s Race to Dubai contender Rory McIlroy defeatingfellow-Briton Simon Dyson by a similar score, all four playershave a win and two points each.
Afternoon matches between McIlory and Stenson, a repeat oftheir recent Seve Trophy match which McIlroy won, and Cabreraand Dyson, will decide which player goes through to thesemi-finals.
McIlroy and Dyson’s match got off to a hurried start, withthe pair having to make a dash from the practice putting greento make their tee-off on time. They did by just 20 seconds, otherwise they would have both forfeited the first hole, whichcould subsequently mean the difference between making thesemi-finals or not.
“We were putting away when we thought we’d better make amove,” McIlory, whose buggy blew a tyre on his way to the tee onThursday to cause him to hurry to the first tee, told reporters.“I thought we still had a couple of minutes to spare.”
McIlroy birdied the final two holes for a late success.
Both the other round-robin groups of four play just oneafternoon match to decide the standings, with American AnthonyKim and Briton Oliver Wilson favourites to go through.

Allenby beat Oliver Wilson of England by three holes to set up a PresidentsCup rematch, where Kim won easily. Kim made bigger headlines then after beingcalled a loose cannon by Allenby for reportedly being spotted drunk only hoursbefore teeing off.
“I’m going to be in bed by 9:30,” Kim said Friday.
Former Masters champion Angel Cabrera also reached the semifinals afterbeating Simon Dyson of England by seven holes.
Kim, who won both of his matches Friday, quickly found himself in a toughposition against his Australian opponent.
“It was pretty tough to hang in there because I was 3 under after eight butthree down,” Kim said. “I knew I just had to hang in there.”
Struggling on the greens, Kim eventually cut the deficit to two holes by No.12, after Strange three-putted from the fringe. He then lost three of the nextfive holes before hitting that clutch shot.
“Being aggressive suits (my style), but sometimes it can be your Achilles’heel,” Kim said. “Every once in a while I get that itch and I go for it.”
Allenby, who was the only unbeaten player to advance, didn’t want to talkabout what happened with Kim at the Presidents Cup.
“It’s all said and done,” Allenby said.
Cabrera was delighted after rebounding from a morning defeat to HenrikStenson in Group C. Cabrera was already 5 up by the eighth of the 18-holematchup against Dyson.
“The truth was that the turnaround in the afternoon was spectacular,” the2007 U.S. Open champion said. “I hit a lot better in the afternoon. In themorning I couldn’t do anything right.”
The Argentine, who lost to Ernie Els in last year’s final, will play RossFisher in Saturday’s other 36-hole matchup after the Englishman beat Jeev MilkhaSingh by one hole.
Fisher advanced in part thanks to Lee Westwood, who rallied to halve hismatch with Camilo Villegas.
Villegas was 5 under through the first eight holes to go 4-up on theEuropean Tour money leader, who went on to take the next three holes. Villegaswould have clinched a place in the last four with a one-hole victory.
Rory McIlroy beat Stenson by four holes in the other Group C match.
Two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen beat Paul Casey by a hole andSergio Garcia was a five-hole winner over Martin Kaymer in other matches.
