October 31, 2009
NEW YORK, Oct 31 (Reuters) – The weather-hit Viking Classicwas cancelled on Saturday after the waterlogged Annandale GolfClub in Madison, Mississippi was lashed by more rain overnight.
More than 26 inches of rain have saturated the par-72 courseover the last month and officials abandoned any chance of thetournament going ahead.
The last time a PGA Tour event was cancelled and notrescheduled was the 1996 Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
In 1991 the Houston Open was completely rained out beforebeing moved from April to October when South African FultonAllem claimed the title.

The American first overcame an errant tee shot on the 26th to save par andhalve the hole before holing out from 101 yards for an eagle at 27. A birdie onthe 28th gave him a four-hole advantage.
Kim will face Masters champion Angel Cabrera or Ross Fisher of England inSunday’s 36-hole final. Fisher was 1-up with three holes to play.
Kim said his par save at the 26th was the key.
“That was the hole that really sealed it for me,” he said.
The American barely held on to his driver at the 26th as his ball sailedleft into the bushes.
After taking relief, Kim pitched to 2 feet for his par while Allenby misseda chance to trim the deficit to one hole by flubbing a chip and then pushing hisbirdie putt wide.
“What happened was pretty crucial because he gave me a gift,” Kim said.“He just miss-hit his chip a little and made par.”
Kim was elated at the 27th—a short par 4—after his sand wedge landed afew feet long before back-spinning into the hole. He then sank his birdie putton the 28th for a four-hole advantage over Allenby, who missed from 4 feet.
Allenby missed several opportunities to get within one before Kim pushedout.
Kim cruised from the 30th after putting his drive within 3 feet for a 5-upadvantage and a chance at the $1.1 million prize.
“This is a very big tournament for me because it’s been a very toughyear,” Kim said. “It’s very rewarding to come out here … and put on a goodshow.”
The last American to win the event was Corey Pavin in 1993. Shaun Micheelreached the final in 2006.

By Norman Dabell
CASARES, Spain, Oct 31 (Reuters) – American Anthony Kimrenewed hostilities with Robert Allenby at the World MatchplayChampionship semi-finals on Saturday, with the Australianirritated his opponent did not concede any putts.

“I gave him a couple of four-footers. Maybe I’ll do the sameto him this afternoon.”
In matchplay, opponents normally give putts inside threefeet but Kim made Allenby putt out all morning.
Kim said: “I don’t think I made him putt any short putts, maybe a two and a half footer. But it had a lot of break. It’smatchplay.”
The duo met in the Presidents Cup singles earlier this monthwhen Allenby criticised the American for staying out late on theeve of their singles duel.
Although media reports suggested the pair had talks toresolve their disagreements, they hardly spoke to each otherduring the round on Saturday.

Golf-Sloppy Poulter blows big lead in Singapore (Reuters)
October 31, 2009
* Poulter squanders five-shot lead
* Third round to conclude early on Sunday
* Levet delighted to be in share of lead
(adds quotes)
By John O’Brien
SINGAPORE, Oct 31 (Reuters) – Ian Poulter dropped four shotsin six holes to slip back into a three-way tie for the lead atthe rain-hit Singapore Open on Saturday as a third weather delayin as many days ended play early midway through the third round.
As dark clouds loomed ominously over the Serapong Course, officials called the players in for their own safety justminutes after Briton Poulter had bogeyed the sixth to joinFrenchman Thomas Levet and Japan’s Kodai Ichihara on eight-underpar.
Australia’s Andrew Dodt and China’s Liang Wenchong are ashot behind the co-leaders, one ahead of Taiwan’s Lin Wen-tang,Briton Richard Finch and Sweden’s Niclas Fasth on a tightleaderboard where four strokes separate the top 19 players.
Resuming his second round in the morning, Poulter surgedfive shots clear of the field with a flawless seven-under 64 andappeared so relaxed after a six-week layoff that a firstEuropean Tour win in three years began to look a formality.
However, the 33-year-old suffered a Halloween horror showafter he returned to the course in the mid-afternoon and when hehooked the opening tee shot to his third round into the rough, his demeanour changed as error after error crept into his game.
He three-putted to drop a shot on the par-four first holebut much worse was to follow on the tricky par-five fourth, where he opted to attack the green with his second shot from apoor lie and succeeded only in dunking his approach in thewater.
DIFFICULT PINS
Finally on the green in four, he underhit his long par puttand took two more shots to complete the hole with an uglydouble-bogey, cutting his lead to just one shot.
The difficult pin positions were proving a challenge to amajority of the field but Poulter’s problems were on the tee andanother errant drive and poor chip led to his fourth droppedshot and the Englishman was suddenly absorbed by the chasingpack.
Levet and Ichihara, meanwhile, were going about their workquietly, each registering two birdies on their front nines andplaying par golf the rest of the way before the weather warninghalted play for the day.
Frenchman Levet was a little surprised to be in a share ofthe lead but was glad his hard work off the course was payingoff in Singapore.
“I have been playing well on practice day the last twomonths but really ugly in the tournaments,” he told reporters.
“I just kept telling myself to wait for it to come and itlooks like it’s finally happening. The driving is still quitepoor but the rest, from the fairways to the greens, is prettygood.
“I am looking forward to tomorrow because I love a battle.”
The diminutive Ichihara insisted he would continue to attackthe course as his confidence was high.
“I will play for the win as I am in a good position,” hesaid. “It’s a tough course for me and rather long and need a lotof mid-irons and hybrids just to reach the greens.
“But this is making me play safe, which is a good thing forthis course.”
None of the 70 players remaining in the $5 millionco-sanctioned event after the cut was made at one-over have yetcompleted their third rounds and they face a long day on thecourse on Sunday to try and finish the tournament on schedule.
There will be no draw once the third round is complete andthe groups that went out on Saturday will remain intact for thefinal 18 holes

By John O’Brien
SINGAPORE, Oct 31 (Reuters) – Briton Ian Poulter stormedfive shots clear of the field at the rain-hit Singapore Open onSaturday, returning early to complete a flawless seven-under 64second round for a 12-under-par total.
The 33-year-old Poulter took a six-week break prior to thisweek’s co-sanctioned $5 million event and the rest appears tohave rejuvenated the flamboyant Englishman, who has recordedjust one bogey in 36 holes around the demanding SerapongCourse.
“I am a little surprised to be playing well after thebreak. Six weeks off, you never know how you are going toplay,” Poulter told reporters.
“As much practice as I put in prior to coming here, I hadbarely played a round of golf. I enjoyed the range work andresting up after that and it has served me well in the lastcouple of days.”
Overnight leader Daniel Chopra of Sweden is tied for secondwith Taiwanese qualifier Chan Yih-shin, one clear of a group ofsix players on six-under which includes South Africa’s ErnieEls, Swede Niclas Fasth and Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen.
Following weather delays in the opening two days, only 61players had completed their second round by Friday, forcingPoulter and a majority of the field to return to the courseearly on Saturday.
SURGE CLEAR
The Briton had made a good start on Friday evening to joinclubhouse leader Chopra on seven-under par and he continued toburn up the course on his resumption, birdying three of thenext five holes to surge three clear by the turn.
“I went out last night and played a couple of holes and gota couple of birdies where my approaches were really close,”Poulter added. “This morning, I carried on where I left off andsank a few putts.”
He added two more birdies on a steady back nine to leavehimself in a strong position to record his first European Tourvictory since winning the Madrid Open in Sept. 2006.
“I am just going to keep hitting the shots I am hitting. Ifelt as if I am playing pretty steady,” Poulter said.
“Hopefully, there’s some better golf to come. It soundssilly with a five-shot lead, but my game is not quite there. Iam feeling my way into a week so it should get better and therewill be more good scores to come.”
The cut was made at one-over par, meaning big names GeoffOgilvy of Australia and Korea’s K.J. Choi (both +2) failed toqualify for the final two rounds.
American world number two Phil Mickelson (-2), Briton’sJustin Rose (par), Ireland’s Padraig Harrington (+1) and twiceformer champion Adam Scott (+1) will all be around for theremainder of the tournament.

Golf-Viking Classic first round postponed until Sunday (Reuters)
October 31, 2009
* No play possible for first three days at Annandale
* Officials to evaluate conditions on Saturday (Adds quotes, detail)
NEW YORK, Oct 30 (Reuters) – The delayed first round of theweather-hit Viking Classic in Madison, Mississippi has beenpostponed until Sunday because of unplayable conditions.
Friday’s scheduled start was pushed back three hours togive the greenkeeping staff more time to prepare the coursebefore officials decided no play was possible on thewaterlogged layout.
Further rain pounded Annandale Golf Club later on Fridayand officials then abandoned any prospect of play on Saturday.
The par-72 layout has had 25 inches of rain in the last 30days and further thunderstorms have been forecast for late onFriday.
“Unfortunately our situation is getting worse,” SluggerWhite, the PGA Tour’s vice president for rules and competition, told reporters. “We are just going to have to wait and see whattomorrow brings.
“We are going to come out, reassess the golf course andhave an update at 11 o’clock local time here. It’s ratherdismal.”
Asked whether the tournament was likely to be cancelled onSaturday morning, White replied: “I just don’t want tospeculate on anything until tomorrow when we look at it again.”
CRYSTAL CLEAR
He was crystal clear, however, about what needed to improvefor the penultimate event on the 2009 PGA Tour to go ahead.
“(We need) the rain to stop, the sunshine to come outtonight and the wind to blow about 50 (mph),” he said. “Thefairways have got to improve and the tees have got to improve.
“We’ve thought about some holes out there that we (could)shorten to par-threes. But other than that, then we justcompromise the competition and that’s not what we’re allabout.”
Former world number one David Duval, one of the players inthe 132-strong field, was pessimistic about the tournament’sprospects.
“It’s hard to imagine a scenario in which we’ll play atall, in my opinion,” the 2001 British Open champion said.
Will MacKenzie is the defending champion at Annandale, having won last year’s title in a three-way playoff with fellowAmericans Brian Gay and Marc Turnesa.
