Hedblom shoots 68 to take lead at Johnnie Walker
August 29, 2009
GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP)—Peter Hedblom shot a 4-under 68 Saturday to take aone-stroke lead over Paul Lawrie after three rounds at the Johnnie WalkerChampionship.
The 39-year-old Swede, who lost a playoff at the Dutch Open last week, wasat 8-under 208. Lawrie (73) dropped into second place after bogeys on Nos. 15-16Gleneagles.
“I didn’t feel that good or hit it that good in my warmup but I playedreally well, very similar to last week,” Hedblom said. “In the past I havestruggled after a good week but this time I have tried to bring the confidencefrom last week into this week.”
Hedblom’s only two victories came at the 1996 Moroccan Open and the 2007Malaysian Open.
Steven O’Hara, who barely made the cut Friday, had the day’s best round witha 66 in the morning. He was two strokes behind Hedblom and tied for third withJamie Donaldson (70), Gregory Bourdy (71) and Soren Hansen (71).
Colin Montgomerie, who also barely made the cut, shot 72 and ended up in32nd. Europe’s Ryder Cup captain is hoping for a top-20 finish.
“A decent round tomorrow could get me there,” Montgomerie said.
Lawrie said he found it difficult in the toughest wind of the week but feltunlucky to be 1 over after five holes when he could have been 2 under.
He bogeyed the 10th and then birdied three of the next four before makingthe two late bogeys.
“At 15, I had 168 yards to the pin and hit a full 9 iron into the bunker,”the 1999 British Open champion said. “At 16, I had just 131 into the wind and Itried to chip a little 8 iron and the wind died and it went into the bunker.Worst shot you’ve ever seen.”
O’Hara began with a 15-footer for eagle at the second and added one from 40feet for birdie at the short.
“The greens were much better so early compared with yesterday afternoon andI was able to hole some putts,” said the Scot, who made five more birdies, including three in a row from the 12th.

Golf-Swede Hedblom repeats last week’s feat to lead in Scotland (Reuters)

By Norman Dabell
GLENEAGLES, Scotland, Aug 29 (Reuters) – Sweden’s PeterHedblom went to the top of the leaderboard for the secondsuccessive Saturday to seize the initiative after the JohnnieWalker Championship third round.
Hedblom returned a four-under-par 68 for an eight-undertotal of 208, one ahead of 1999 British Open champion PaulLawrie (73) who led for the opening two days.
Two late bogeys dropped Lawrie to seven-under, a strokebetter than fellow Britons Steven O’Hara (66) and JamieDonaldson (70), Frenchman Gregory Bourdy (71) and 2008 Ryder Cupplayer Soren Hansen (71) of Denmark.
Hedblom held a two-shot advantage going into the final roundof last week’s Dutch Open before losing out to Briton SimonDyson in a playoff that also included Irishman Peter Lawrie.
The 39-year-old Swede said he had to scramble to get inenough practice before his third round at Gleneagles afterstaying too long in his hotel gymnasium.
However, the short practice routine did not prevent Hedblomoverhauling Scot Lawrie on a windy day on the Centenary coursethat will host the 2014 Ryder Cup.
MORE RELAXED
“Sometimes I’ve struggled the week after playing good,”Hedblom told reporters. “But I seem to have brought all theconfidence I got last week.
“I’m sure I’m going to be more relaxed tomorrow than lastweek when I had worries about keeping my (European Tour) card. Ifeel I didn’t so much lose as Simon won, anyway.”
Hedblom is seeking his third tour title while Lawrie is keento end a seven-year victory drought.
“I’m playing well and looking forward to the last round,”said Lawrie. “I can’t remember when I last went out in the finalround in the last group.”
Donaldson said the players found it tricky coping with theweather conditions.
“It was pretty blowy all day, we had quite a bit of rain offand on,” said the Welshman.
“You don’t have to go ballistic. You’ve just got to know howto do it I suppose and put yourself in positions.”
The 13th hole proved a calamitous one for British rookieJonathan Caldwell, who had been joint second overnight.
The Northern Irishman four-putted there from only two feetfor a triple-bogey seven as he slid to a 76 for 214.
Jose Maria Olazabal, who was also in the title huntovernight, bogeyed the last four holes for a 77 and 216, thesame tally as Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie (72).

Fellow American Webb Simpson, a 24-year-old tour rookie, offset one bogey with one birdie to remain eight-under throughnine holes.
A further shot behind was American Steve Marino, one aheadof Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden who rattled off four birdies insuccession from the fifth after bogeys at the second and third.
Tied at five-under were Briton Ian Poulter (nine holes) andAmerican Steve Stricker (10).
Tiger Woods and Yang Yong-eun, who waged a final-round duelat this month’s U.S. PGA Championship, also made good progress.

The Barclays, Round 3 (PGATOUR.com)
August 29, 2009
TIGER UPDATE (2:45 p.m.): Tiger Woods is on the back nine at Liberty National, where he started hot with three straight birdies on the front nine to climb to 3 under and into a tie for fifth. Since then, however, Woods has cooled, making four pars and a bogey. That's dropped him back down the leaderboard some and Woods is now seven shots back of leader Paul Goydos, who is 3 under through his first six holes.—Brian Wacker

CADDIE CHANGE IN THE WORKS (2:35 p.m.): Kenny Perry is comfortably in the next two events in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup and will more than likely make the run all the way to THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola. Here, he is 1 under at the turn on Saturday's round and 3 over for the tournament. And while the last two years have been nothing short of incredible for Perry, who has five wins dating back to the start of last season, he's about to make a change, perhaps for the better.
Although Perry and long-time caddie Fred Sanders haven't missed a cut since last January, a new era of Perry's career gets under way next week when his son, Justin, will take over on the bag, replacing Sanders.
The caddies call being replaced by a family member or friend, "getting MCI-ed." In other words, Perry is going with the friends and family plan.—John Maginnes
BACK-NINE BLITZ (2:20 p.m.): Starting his third round on the 10th tee, Greg Owen just blitzed the back nine with a 4-under 31, which ties for the lowest score on the back nine this week at Liberty National. Sergio Garcia also posted a 31 on the back nine in Thursday's first round.
Unlike Friday morning's brutally tough conditions, it's apparent that low scores are available for the taking. Owen and Bo Van Pelt are each 4 under for their rounds today, and 21 other players currently are under par for their rounds.—Mike McAllister
GOYDOS GRABS LEAD (2:12 p.m.): Paul Goydos has taken over the lead thanks to a couple of birdies, along with a bogey by 36-hole leader Webb Simpson.
Should Goydos, who is making the 424th start of his career on the PGA TOUR, remain the leader after 54 holes, it would be just the third time in his career that he's entered the final round with the lead.
Goydos was the 54-hole leader at THE PLAYERS Championship in 2008 and the Travelers Championship in 2009. At THE PLAYERS, he finished second, losing in a playoff to Sergio Garcia. At the Travelers, he finished tied for second behind Kenny Perry.—Mike McAllister
GAY STILL GOING STRONG (2:02 p.m.): Brian Gay has already won twice this year on the PGA TOUR. He's been battling a bad back of late, though; missed the cut at the PGA Championship and ended up 12th in the standings for the U.S. Presidents Cup team.
So if Gay is to impress Captain Fred Couples, who makes his two picks on Sept. 8, he needs to giddy-up. That's why his steady climb up the leaderboard this week couldn't come at a better time.
The Floridian birdied his first two holes on Saturday and is 2 under through eight holes and for the tournament, which leaves him firmly entrenched in the top 10. He rolled in a 10-footer at No. 1 and an 8-footer at the second. He nearly picked up a third birdie at No. 8 but missed from 7 feet.
While Couples has indicated Lucas Glover and Hunter Mahan are the top candidates, a strong showing—or perhaps a win—from Gay in the first two Playoff events would certainly make the U.S. Captain's decision harder.—Helen Ross
NUMBER GAME (1:48 p.m.): Just how difficult was Liberty National yesterday? Well, in the first round, the scoring average was 71.960 for the par-71 track across the Hudson River from the Manhattan. Yesterday, that number ballooned to 74.361 with 142 fewer birdies and 82 more bogeys. What about today? So far, Liberty National is playing to a scoring average of 70.966. Though that number will probably go up some, there's no way it will approach 74 and the biggest reason it won't is because the weather won't be near as bad as it was yesterday.—Brian Wacker
ANOTHER BIRDIE FOR TIGER (1:33 p.m.): Tiger Woods is on a run of three consecutive birdies, his longest stretch since the second round of the PGA Championship in his most recent start when he birdied three straight holes on his way to claiming the 36-hole lead. Woods is now at 3 under for the tournament. Although he's five shots off the lead held by Webb Simpson, just four players are now ahead of him on the leaderboard. Incidentally, Justin Rose and Greg Owen also have put together strings of three straight birdies in the third round.—Mike McAllister
MARINO'S MAGIC STICK (1:25 p.m.): Will Steve Marino's putter remain on fire during Saturday's moving day? Through his first 36 holes, Marino has one-putted 23 times. His one-putt rate of 64 percent ranks him first in the field this week; for the year, he ranks just 141st in one-putt percentage (36 percent), so he's really turned it up a notch.
Inside 7 feet this week, Marino has been perfect, making all 29 of his attempts in the first two rounds. No wonder he has needed just 47 putts as he enters Saturday's round just two strokes off the lead held by Webb Simpson.
Incidentally, no player has made more birdies since the start of the 2007 season than Marino, who has 1,119 birdies in that span. Brian Davis is next on the list with 1,053 birdies.—Mike McAllister
Steve Marino On the Greens This Week vs. 2009 Season Stat This Week 2009 Season Total Putting T5th 98th One-putt percentage 64% (1) 36% (141) 3-putt percentage 0 (T1) 2.7% (T75) Putts per round 23.5 (1) 29.28 (118) Putting 4-8 feet 100% (T1) 71% (48) Total Birdies 11 (T1) 301 (8) Par-5 performance 5 under (T1) 96 under (T6)
WHY WEBB IS LEADING (1:15 p.m.): Proximity to the hole is one of the most underrated stats on the PGA TOUR. Simply put, the closer you're hitting your approach shots, the better chance you have at making the putt.
This week, though, that stat is particularly telling given how vexing Liberty National's greens have been. Take leader Webb Simpson. For the year, he's averaging 35 feet, 5 inches, which ranks 105th on TOUR. This week, he's been just over 8 feet closer and ranks second in the field. As you'll see in the chart below, he's also made the putts he should make and even when he's missed the green, he's managed to get up-and-down fairly effectively.
If Simpson keeps doing all those things, he should become the first rookie to win on TOUR this season.—Brian Wacker
Webb Simpson – This Week vs. 2009 Season Stat This Week 2009 Season Greens in regulation 56% (T33) 62% (170) Proximity to hole 27 feet, 3 inches (2) 35 feet, 5 inches (T105) Rough proximity 25 feet, 7 inches (6) 42 feet, 3 inches (T83) Scrambling 88% (1) 62% (T36) Scrambling Proximity 5 feet, 3 inches (T9) 7 feet, 1 inch (T86) Putts per round 24 (2) 28.31 (9) Putting inside 10 feet 94% (7) 87% (125) Bogey avoidance 8.3% (1) 17% (T102)
TIGER UPDATE (1:05 p.m.): For just the second time this week, Tiger Woods has made back-to-back birdies. Woods birdied the par-4 fifth then just added another at the par-5 sixth. which he has now birdied twice this week.
That moves him into the top 10 for the moment and within six of the lead. Usually, Saturday is moving day on the PGA TOUR, but with Liberty National playing so difficult in not the best weather, you have to wonder where Woods will be if he can add another couple of birdies before his round is over, especially considering rookie Webb Simpson hasn't been in this position before and there aren't a whole lot of big names above Woods on the leaderboard.—Brian Wacker
MATTESON TRYING TO MAKE MOST OF OPPORTUNITY (1 p.m.): Troy Matteson had the dubious distinction of being the last man in at The Barclays. Of course, coming to New Jersey ranked No. 125 is better than having a five-week layoff.
Matteson is certainly playing like he wants to hang around in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, too. He's 2 under through six holes and currently among the top 10 players on the leaderboard.
Matteson, who was the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year in 2006, rolled in a 6-footer at No. 5 to get into red numbers quickly on a dreary afternoon at Liberty National. Then he rolled in a 15-footer from just off the green at the par-5 sixth to continue his surge.—Helen Ross
WHO'S IN, WHO'S OUT (12:45 p.m.): Webb Simpson, who leads by two, will continue the pursuit of his first PGA TOUR title in this, his rookie year, in about 15 minutes from now when he tees off in the day's last group. Having entered the week 85th in the FedExCup standings, and projected to move up to second should he go on to win, he's already secured a spot in the field for next week's Deutsche Bank Championship.
He's not the only one, though. Any player ranked 74th or better in the standings, is assured a trip to Boston. And any player in the remaining field could reach the top 5 in the standings with a win or runner-up finish.
As for the guy who tops the FedExCup points list, he has a 1,276-point lead, but could mathematically be passed by anyone ranked 32nd or higher should that player go on to win and claim the 2,500 points that goes with a victory.
Back to who's in/out. There are currently seven players projected to play their way into Round 2 of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup from outside the top 100; and six who are projected to be going home after this week (see charts below; for more projections).—Brian Wacker

TRACKING TIGER (12:30 p.m.): Four holes, four pars. As tough as Liberty National has played this week, that's not going to get it done for Tiger Woods, who has already missed two of his first four greens in regulation here in the third round.
Clearly the FedExCup points leader has been frustrated by his play and the course. Yesterday, while trying to drive the par-4 16th, he hit his tee shot miles to the right, then nearly took out his frustration on a tee marker before stopping short.
Woods has also struggled with his putting this week. While he's a very good 39 of 43 from inside 10 feet, he's made just one putt out of seven from 10-15 feet. And with just three par-5s on the course, Liberty National doesn't exactly suit the game of the guy who leads the PGA TOUR in par-5 performance—he's played them in just 2 under this week with two birdies and four pars through two rounds.
If Woods is going to make up the eight strokes he trails by over the next two days, he'll need to do better in all those areas. ( to follow Tiger's round live with Shot Tracker.)—Brian Wacker
GAY OFF TO GOOD START (12:10 p.m.): Brian Gay is probably on the outside looking in when it comes to Fred Couples' Captain's picks for The Presidents Cup, but he's doing everything he can to make the decision difficult for Captain Couples.
After rounds of 70-72 here at Liberty National, Gay is already 2 under today, having birdied each of his first two holes.
"If [Hunter Mahan and Lucas Glover] continue to play the way they are playing, then Brian Gay has got to step it up," Couples said two weeks ago. Well, Gay, who Couples believes has been injured but who has also been mum about whether he is or not, is certainly doing that so far.
The trouble, though, is that Couples has already told Glover that he's on the team and he'd already been leaning toward Mahan prior to this week. Mahan, by the way, is even through five holes today and 2 over for the week.
If Gay, who has currently moved into a tie for ninth, continues to make birdies and contends, though, making that call is going to be awfully difficult for Couples.—Brian Wacker
WEATHER UPDATE (11:45 a.m.): A steady drizzle is falling here at Liberty National this morning, but the heaviest precipitation is expected to remain off shore. That doesn't mean there won't be scattered showers or a thunderstorm in the afternoon—and they are playing lift, clean and place today—but Tropical Storm Danny appears headed for Long Island and on to the Massachusetts coastline. The high temperature will be in the upper 70s.
The outlook for Sunday is much more promising with partly cloudy and breezy conditions in the forecast. Highs will return to the mid-80s and winds should top out at 12-22 mph in the afternoon as the leaders make the turn.—Helen Ross

Simpson leads at a rain-soaked Barclays
August 29, 2009
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP)—The top 10 players in the FedEx Cup standings goinginto the PGA Tour playoffs had combined to win 21 of the 37 tournaments, led bytop-seeded Tiger Woods and his five victories.
The leaderboard going into the weekend at The Barclays looks a littledifferent.
With so much star power at Liberty National, the leader through 36 holes is24-year-old Webb Simpson, who had two top 10s in January and none since. Heleads Steve Marino, who has never won on tour, and Paul Goydos, whose two tourvictories came 11 years apart.
Of the top 10 on the leaderboard, Steve Stricker is the only player to havewon this year.
“I couldn’t have picked a better time to be playing well,” Simpson said.

That could be interpreted two days. It helps to play the best golf over thefinal four tournaments of the season, especially with a $10 million prizewaiting for the winner of the points-based FedEx Cup.
And it was ideal to play well on Friday.
One day after players had a relatively easy time with Liberty National—26players broke par in the opening round—birdies were rare in the wet andslightly windy conditions, making a long course play even more difficult.
“It was pretty much survival mode out there,” said Sergio Garcia. He shota 76 in the tougher morning conditions, when only two players broke par, andslipped from a share of the lead into a tie for 11th.
Simpson planned ahead.
He saw the morning scores—seven rounds in the 80s, two belonging toMasters champion Angel Cabrera and U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover—and knew itwould be tough. Simpson realized he had to make his score on the par 5s andshorter holes, allowing him some room to make the inevitable mistake.
“My caddie and I talked beforehand about taking advantage of the par 5s andthe shorter par 4s, just because we knew we were going to make bogeys,” Simpsonsaid. “It was just one of those long, tough days. But I feel good with whereI’m at.”
It worked beautifully: Simpson birdied two of the par 5s, the shortest par 3at Liberty National, and the shortest par 4. It added to a 3-under 68, matchingErnie Els for the best score of the second round, and it gave him a two-shotlead.
Simpson was at 8-under 134.
Goydos and Marino, who shared the lead with Garcia after Thursday, both didwell to get around in even-par 71. They were at 136.
Fredrik Jacobson and Heath Slocum each had 72 and were at 4-under 138, whilethe group at 139 included Stricker, Richard Johnson of Sweden and Ian Poulter, who thought he actually might be leading when he finished in the morning.
Els is winless since the Honda Classic in March 2008, yet he got himselfinto the mix with an eagle on the 16th hole, where the tees were moved forwardto make it play 295 yard. The Big Easy hit a big drive to 8 feet and made theputt.

“I’m playing good,” Els said. “I’ve really driven the ball well so far.My iron play feels good. My putter feels better. You know, I might even have achance this weekend. We’ll see.”
Woods also tried to drive the 16th, with much less success.
It started to the right, toward the water hazard. It kept going right, tothe other side of the hazard, beyond the 17th tee boxes, settling in deep roughsome 65 yards to the right of his target. Woods nearly blasted the tee marker tosmithereens, stopping his club a foot short. He slammed his club to the ground. He thought about taking out a red stake, but swung at the high native grass, instead.
He wound up making par.
He must have been frustrated.
That remained a mystery, however, because Woods refused to speak toreporters for the second straight day. No explanation was given.
Smiles were rare on Friday, except at the top of the leaderboard.

The cut came at 5-over 147, matching the highest cut of the year (Bay Hill).Only nine players broke par, one day after there were 26 scores under par. Theaverage score was 74.361, nearly 2 1/2 shots harder than the first round.
“It was hands down—I mean, forget about the PGA (Championship)—it wasthe longest course I’ve played this year, the way it was playing,” Garcia said.“I don’t know how many 5-, 4- and 3-irons I hit into the greens. I hit somewoods into the green.”
Goydos was atop the leaderboard for most of the round until he finished withthree bogeys over his last four holes. He at least was happy to make enough parsand birdies that a sloppy ending to his round didn’t hurt him.
Plus, he knew what to expect.
“I was watching it a little bit this morning, and it didn’t look likeanybody was having a whole lot of fun,” Goydos said. “And quite frankly, Iwent downstairs about nine o’clock and looked down, and didn’t look like the guyparking the cars was having a whole lot of fun, either.”
The difficulty came from a combination of factors.
A half-dozen tees were moved up, which helped. What hurt was the wetconditions—the rain in the morning and the soft turf throughout the cloudy day— and the heavy air that kept the ball from traveling very far.
“Throw in the fact that if you do hit it a little crooked, you’ve got 3 or4 inches of wet rough,” Goydos said. “You’ve got greens that look like myshirts after I’ve packed them. It just makes for a challenge.”

Golf-Poulter ignores rain to take clubhouse lead at Jersey City (Reuters)

By Larry Fine
JERSEY CITY, New Jersey, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Britain’s IanPoulter ignored the rain to take the clubhouse lead midwaythrough the Barclays Classic second round on Friday.
Poulter posted three birdies and four bogeys in miserableconditions at the 7,400-yard Liberty National to register aone-over-par 72 and a three-under aggregate of 139.
Overnight co-leaders Paul Goydos and Steve Marino, whoopened with 65s, were late starters as was world number oneTiger Woods (70).
With no run on the rain-softened fairways and with windsblowing across the scenic course by New York harbour, par was agood score for the select field competing in the first leg ofthe PGA Tour’s four-tournament FedExCup series.
Americans Bill Haas (70) and Charles Howell III (70)produced the only sub-par rounds of the morning to finish on 142and 146 respectively.
“It was brutally tough when the rain started and the windpicked up but I hung in there,” Poulter told reporters.
“I’m a little disappointed to make bogey on two of thepar-fives. That was a little bit careless and frustrating.”
American Charley Hoffman was one stroke behind Poulter aftershooting a 74 for 140.
Spain’s Sergio Garcia, who also shared the overnight lead, slid to a 76 for 141.
“It was hands down the longest course I’ve played this year, the way it was playing,” said Garcia.
“I don’t know how many five, four and three-irons I hit intothe green. I (also) hit some woods into the green.”
Triple major champion Padraig Harrington returned a 75 for142.
“I am used to it (the rain) but it doesn’t mean I like it,”said the Irishman.

Golf-Lawrie steaming along in top gear at Gleneagles (Reuters)
August 28, 2009
By Norman Dabell
GLENEAGLES, Scotland, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Britain’s PaulLawrie boosted his chances of a first victory in seven yearswhen he extended his overnight lead to two strokes after theJohnnie Walker Championship second round on Friday.
The 1999 British Open champion carded a three-under-par 69for an eight-under tally of 136, two ahead of fellow countrymanJonathan Caldwell (66), Dutchman Maarten Lafeber (67) andArgentine Daniel Vancsik (69).
Twice U.S. Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal (68), doggedby health problems for nearly two years, was in a group threeshots off the lead.
Lawrie has recently started using coach Bob Torrance, whoalso helps triple major champion Padraig Harrington, as heattempts to climb from 97th place on the European Tourmoney-list.
Bob, father of former Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance, hasbeen instrumental in Lawrie’s revival this week.
“I’ve always been prone to the odd hook and I’ve certainlygot rid of that the last couple of days,” the tournament leadertold reporters.
Lawrie, who started the day with a one-stroke lead, has wonfive times on the tour but his most recent victory came at the2002 Wales Open.
Northern Ireland’s Caldwell, who partnered Rory McIlroy atthe 2007 Walker Cup, produced the best round of his rookie year.
He has missed the cut in nine of 13 events this year andlies 280th on the money-list.
RYDER CUP
Olazabal was relieved to find some form after a worryingtime when his rheumatic problems flared up again, and refused torule out the prospect of an eighth Ryder Cup appearance nextyear.
“I’m still in a bit of pain so it all depends on my health,”he said. “When I start to feel pain-free and begin practising atthe level needed, then maybe yes.”
Lawrie, who played alongside Olazabal on Friday, said theSpaniard’s presence in the Ryder Cup match against the U.S. nextyear as a player or assistant to captain Colin Montgomerie wouldbe important for the European team.
“It’s not for me to tell Colin what to do but if Ollie isnot there in some capacity I think the European cause is goingto be weaker,” said the 40-year-old Scot.
