Nicklaus to join Palmer as 2010 Masters starter

August 31, 2009

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP)—Jack Nicklaus has a tee time again at the Masters.

Augusta National announced Monday that Nicklaus will join Arnold Palmer asan honorary starter for next year’s Masters.

Nicklaus is a six-time Masters champion who last played the tournament in2005. He says he accepted the invitation because it was also supported byPalmer, his longtime friend who began hitting the ceremonial tee shot in 2007.

Nicklaus will become the eighth honorary starter. The tradition began at theMasters in 1963, when Nicklaus won his first green jacket.

Sam Snead hit the opening tee shot in 2002, but the Masters didn’t have anhonorary starter again until Palmer two years ago. Palmer decided next year tohave a playing partner.

“I have always had great respect for Arnold and his legacy at the Masters, and I did not, in any way, want to infringe on the opportunity for Arnold tohave and enjoy this Masters tradition for himself,” Nicklaus said in astatement. “He is so deserving of this honor, and thus I felt it was his time, not mine.”

He added that because Palmer “enthusiastically supported the invitation, itbecame an easy decision for me.”

The 2010 Masters is scheduled for April 5-11.

For the 2nd tournament, another flinch by Tiger

August 31, 2009

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP)—Much to his chagrin, Tiger Woods has put some suspenseback into golf.

Give him the lead going into the final round of the major, and victory is nolonger as certain as death, taxes and Woods wearing a red shirt on Sunday. Watchhim hit a clutch shot to the 18th green, and there is no guarantee he’ll makethe putt.

Y.E. Yang delivered a shocker two weeks ago at the PGA Championship when hebecame the first player to beat golf’s best closer, rallying from two shotsbehind Woods for a three-shot victory at Hazeltine.

Woods rarely looked so human. And then on Sunday at Liberty National, hebled a little more.

He was on the cusp of contention for most of the final round at The Barclaysuntil the bell rang for the final lap. Then, Woods made a 10-foot birdie on the14th to move closer to the lead, a 15-foot par putt on the next hole to staythere, and a deft chip-and-run to 3 feet for birdie on the 16th that pulled himwithin one shot.

Needing a birdie on the final hole to post the clubhouse lead—at leastforce a playoff, maybe enough win—he drilled a 6-iron from 189 yards to theback pin at the 18th and listened to those familiar roars as the ball settled 7feet from the cup.

Heath Slocum and Steve Stricker, tied for the lead, were on the 18th tee asWoods stood over his birdie putt. Even from 467 yards away, it was not difficultto figure out what was going on. If the cheers weren’t enough, that red shirt ishard to miss.

“Usually he makes it,” Slocum said. “Ho-hum for him.”

Surprise!

The ball slid by on the left side of the cup, and they could hear the groans— twice. Because the large video boards and TVs in corporate chalets had about a10-second delay, the big news reached some people later than others.

“It’s kind of funny, actually,” Slocum said, referring to the double doseof reaction. “But I knew that he had missed it.”

That wasn’t the case for Slocum. Despite hitting a fairway bunker, playingshort of the green and hitting a wedge to 20 feet, he rolled in the best parputt of his life for a one-shot victory. Stricker had a chance to tie, butmissed from 10 feet.

“I guess you can’t make ‘em all,” Slocum said.

Yang was the first to see for himself when he took down the biggest name ingolf.

Slocum beat a bunch of stars. The group one shot behind featured Woods,Stricker, Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington, who have combined to win 20 majors. All of them have been at least No. 3 in the world at some point.

The common thread in both tournaments was Woods having a chance to win, andWoods finishing second.

“That’s the way it goes sometimes,” he said.

Along with his 81 victories worldwide, he has finished second 32 times intournaments recognized by the world golf rankings.

Even so, this was only the fifth time in his career that Woods has finishedrunner-up in consecutive tournaments. The last time it happened was at the endof his 2006 season, when he was second to Yang at the HSBC Champions inShanghai, then surrendered a lead on the back nine to Harrington and lost to himin a playoff at the Dunlop Phoenix in Japan.

Go back to 2005 to find the last time it happened in America. Woods wasrunner-up to Michael Campbell in the U.S. Open, then tied for second at theWestern Open in Chicago.

Unlike the other four occasions, Woods had a realistic chance of winningboth times as he stood on the 18th tee.

And the reason failure stands out so much is that it rarely happened before.

No other greens confounded Woods quite like the ones at Liberty National. Itwas only fitting that he missed a 7-foot putt at the end because he had donethat all week. On his first hole of the tournament, Woods hit a pure 5-iron to10 feet behind the hole at No. 10 and looked perplexed when it broke away fromthe cup.

Even as he tried to make a move Saturday, his 67 was slowed by missing an8-foot eagle putt at No. 6 that stunned even one his playing partners, ZachJohnson. He missed from 5 feet later in the third round on No. 15 and wasspewing expletives all the way to the next tee.

“It happens,” Woods said Sunday. “Not too many golf courses that youmisread putts that badly. This golf course is one.”

Another course he mentioned was Fancourt in South Africa for the PresidentsCup in 2003. But that’s where Woods made a putt he called one of the mostnerve-racking of his career. He was on the third playoff hole against Els, innear darkness, facing a 15-foot par putt that broke both ways, right up theridge, then left as it moved down toward the hole.

The most famous putt was his 6-foot birdie on the 72nd hole of the 2000 PGAChampionship which he made to force a playoff that he won against Bob May on hisway to four consecutive majors.

This year, Woods won his first PGA Tour event since returning fromreconstructive knee surgery by making a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole atBay Hill. It was the same green where he made a 25-foot birdie putt a yearearlier to win by one shot, where he made a 15-footer to beat Phil Mickelson in2001.

The list is long.

It will take more than two tournaments to put a dent in Woods’ mystique.

Besides, his loss is golf’s gain, for it now puts some doubt into theoutcome—if not in Woods’ head, then the people watching, and even those tryingto beat him.

The 2010 Masters will take place from April 8 to 11.

August 31, 2009

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP)—The little guy from the sticks beat Tiger Woods and acast of big stars in perhaps the most urban setting in PGA Tour history.

With the Manhattan skyline looming in the background on a clear, breezy day,Slocum made a 20-foot par putt on the 18th hole for a one-stroke victory overWoods, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and playing partner Steve Stricker.

“It was an incredible day, incredible experience,” Slocum said. “I wasjust kind of lucky to come out on top. A lot of good players. At the end of theday, that putt on the last was magical. I’ll remember that for the rest of mylife.”

A week ago, the short-hitting Slocum wasn’t even sure he would make it tothe FedEx Cup opener. Having missed the cut in Greensboro, N.C., he had to waituntil the tournament was over to learn that by the slimmest of margins—twopoints—he had earned the second-to-last spot among the 125 qualifiers.

“My fate was not in my own hands,” Slocum said.

It was on the 18th green at long, hard Liberty National.

On the same green where Woods stunned the crowd by missing from 7 feet,Slocum knocked in the 20-footer, then watched Stricker miss his 10-foot par try.

Slocum closed with a 4-under 67 to win for the third time in his career, andfirst time in four years. The victory, worth $1.35 million, moved him to No. 3in the FedEx Cup standings, giving him a shot at the $10 million prize nextmonth in Atlanta.

“I’m going to use this experience hopefully for the rest of my life, knowing that I can come down the stretch and play, if you want, with the bigboys,” Slocum said.

Slocum holed a 25-foot birdie putt at No. 2, the toughest par 3 at LibertyNational, then surged into a share of the lead by holing out from 157 yards witha 7-iron for eagle on the par-4 fifth.

“As soon as I hit it, I knew I just flushed it,” he said. “It was goingright to the pin. I saw it hit. I didn’t see anything else. I didn’t see it goin. The crowd went crazy. I didn’t know if it was really close or if it had gonein.”

Stricker had a good look at the unlikely eagle that Slocum didn’t see go in— and broadcaster CBS missed completely while focusing on Woods a hole ahead.

“He hit it just past the hole,” Stricker said. “It jumped right back in.Just like a little gopher going for his hole, it just jumped right in.”

Woods, playing his first tournament since losing a two-shot lead tounheralded Y.E. Yang in the PGA Championship, struggled again with his putter, never really trusting himself on the small, undulating greens.

Woods rimmed out an early 3-foot par putt and twice missed from inside 10feet on par 5s. After a 6-iron from 189 yards to 7 feet on 18 gave him a chanceto tie for the lead, Woods’ birdie putt slid by on the left.

“It happens,” said Woods, who shot a 67. “Not too many golf courses thatyou misread putts that badly. This golf course is one.”

Padraig Padraig Harrington, of Ireland… AP – Aug 30, 8:25 pm EDT

Els closed with a bogey-free 66, Harrington had a 67, and Stricker shot a69.

Tied for the lead at 9 under, Slocum and Stricker drove into fairway bunkerson 18.

Stricker caught the lip of the bunker, which left him short of the green, and hit wedge to 10 feet. Slocum also came up short, leaving 20 feet from thetop of a ridge.

Slocum raised both arms in the air when his par putt broke gently back tothe left and disappeared into the cup. Stricker’s putt to force a playoff caughtthe left lip.

“Hats off to Heath,” Stricker said. “He made a great putt on that lasthole. It came down to a couple of putts to decide it all.”

Slocum, who came into The Barclays at No. 197 in the world ranking, finishedat 9-under 275 for the biggest win of his career. His other two victories wereopposite-field events in Arizona and Mississippi, when the best players in theworld were competing elsewhere. He faced an All-Star cast this time.

“Heath is a very steady player,” Stricker said. “He’s a very good player.I don’t think we should be surprised that he won.”

The top 100 players in the FedEx Cup standings qualified for the DeutscheBank Championship next weekend outside Boston. Slocum, Fredrik Jacobson, TroyMatteson and Richard S. Johnson moved into the top 100, bumping K.J. Choi, BenCurtis, George McNeill and Matt Bettencourt out of the playoffs.

After the Deutsche Bank, the playoff field will be cut to 70 for the BMWChampionship and to 30 for the Tour Championship.

Before heading to Boston, Slocum and pregnant wife Victoria planned to stayan extra day to do some sightseeing in Manhattan with infant daughter Stella.

“I have a feeling that no one is going to know who I am,” Slocum said.

His peers sure do.

“He’s very quiet. Very quiet,” Woods said. “Pretty unassuming. Just kindof goes about his business. He’s a very straight hitter of the golf ball.Doesn’t have a lot of power, but hits the ball very straight.”

Another big tournament, another big upset (Yahoo! Sports)

August 31, 2009

Let’s hear it for the 2009 golf season – The Year of the “Say What?” tournament.

Or, as it’s known by its alternate name, The Year of the “You Gotta Be Bleeping Kidding Me” tournament.

What in the name of Y.E. Yang is going on around here? First, Lucas Glover kissed the U.S. Open trophy, then 59-year-old Tom Watson nearly blew our doors off at Turnberry.

Somewhere in heaven, Orville Moody is buying a round.

Your latest entry in the YOSW (Year of the “Say What?”, in case you forgot) sweepstakes is one Heath Slocum, who was such a party-crasher at an invite-only event, you’d have figured Tiger, Ernie and Padraig sent security over to have Slocum’s credentials checked.

Those credentials would have shown Slocum to be one of those names you always see on the fringes of leaderboards; one of those names that makes you think, “Heath Slocum … why do I know that name?”, until you realize that unless you were the tournament director of the 2004 Tucson Open or the 2005 Southern Farm Bureau Classic – his only wins – you don’t know that name. Boo Weekley knows the name, but that’s because they went to high school together.

And yet, there was Slocum, carving out a final-round 67 and making an improbable 21-footer for par on the 72nd hole to win The Barclays by one shot over three Hall of Famers – Tiger, Ernie and Padraig – not to mention the Cheesehead Hall of Famer, Steve Stricker.

Even Lady Liberty, shining in the harbor nearby, was overheard by tourists to say: Heath Slocum? Say what?

There’s no rhyme or reason to a Slocum win over the titans, coming from four shots back Sunday, to boot; no greater meaning to be divined, other than this is what happens when you a) hold enough golf tournaments; and b) let Tiger Woods start missing putts.

So, cheers to Slocum, who should enjoy his $1.35 million check and newfound FedEx Cup status points while the rest of the golf world frets over a more pressing issue. Namely, who kidnapped Tiger and put this guy who can’t putt in his place?

Two weeks ago, we addressed the elephant in the living room, raising the question: Tiger doesn’t have to make EVERY big putt in a big moment, does he? Old-timers will tell you Arnold Palmer started missing some in his mid-30s, as did Watson. It can happen, and while we’re a long way from Tiger’s putter being declared D.O.A., we are at the end of a summer where his putter no-showed at Bethpage, where he missed everything of import at Hazeltine, and where his 6-footer on the 72nd hole at Liberty National to tie for the lead never touched the cup.

Even Lady Liberty, shining in the harbor nearby, was overheard by tourists to say: Tiger missed a 6-footer with the tourney on the line? Say what?

It was that kind of day.

So the FedEx Cup gave us something to chew on – I mean, besides the fact that the private club at which The Barclays was played both requires a half-million initiation fee and is built on a former toxic waste dump.

Sure, Liberty National was gorgeous on the TV with all those Manhattan skyline shots, but when a golf club is in Jersey City, and when we’re told it’s a former toxic waste dump, it’s hard to concentrate on the golf without thinking of names like Gotti, Hoffa and Soprano making use of the old land for, ahem, “clearance.”

No wonder Tiger had such trouble reading the greens. Who knows what, ahem, “objects” were buried under those mounds?

I mean, how many PGA Tour courtesy cars were parked at “The Bing” this weekend?

So the FedEx Cup playoffs are off and humming, and while the obvious criticisms still hold – they’ll never be as important as the majors; once the NFL starts, we’ll all turn away; and the whole thing seems an obscene money grab – we must give credit where it’s due.

The FedEx Cup playoffs have Tiger out of his lair for what appears to be four out of five weeks, and that’s saying something. Last year, of course, he was out with the knee surgery. And two years ago, he blithely blew off one of the events, mostly to just remind Tim Finchem who the real Commish is.

This year he may play all four, and that says one of two things: 1. He really wants to fix that putter; or 2. Having two rugrats running around the house in Florida might call for a little R&R on the golf course.

Scorecard of the week

• Byehoung-Hun An d. Ben Martin, 7 and 5, U.S. Amateur championship.

Rough weekend for Tiger. Not only did he watch Slocum make putts he used to make, but this An kid has now made Tiger, at 33, feel even more out of touch with his glory days.

It might seem about 50 years since Tiger himself became the youngest U.S. Amateur winner in the summer of 1994 with his fist-pumping comeback over Trip Kuehne at Sawgrass, but it was only 15 years, and at the time, it was hugely historic. Tiger was the youngest U.S. Amateur winner ever, and what 18-year-old would ever have the nerves, moxie and sangfroid to break that mark amid a playing field of grown men bent on crushing the wills of any teenage upstarts?

Well, Danny Lee, for one. Last year, Lee broke Tiger’s record as the youngest man to kiss the Havermeyer Trophy.

One year later, Byehoung-Hun An broke Lee’s record. An is 17.

When you break the record of the guy who broke Tiger’s record, you know you done good.

The kid sports spectacles that make him look like he’s spent more time at the chemistry lab than the putting green, but apparently, after moving to America from South Korea to pursue his dream of golf, the kid’s four-eyed look is meant to hide a killer instinct.

His Korean parents won Olympic medals in table tennis at the Seoul Games in 1988, so he’s got pedigree, too. He must be the only kid in the world who can’t thrash his Mom in ping-pong.

Here’s an interview we’d like to hear:

REPORTER: “Given that you’ve done something Tiger hasn’t done, would you like to one day play against your idol, the great Tiger?”

AN: “Uh, my idol is Y.E. Yang, so can you re-phrase the question?”

Congrats, kid. And keep the specs. They make you unique.

Mulligan of the week

• Out of nowhere, Ernie Els appeared on our TV screens on Sunday.

I almost had to call my cable company and tell them there was obviously some sort of mistake: An important golf tournament was on, and Els was in contention. I would, of course, need a repairman to come to my house and wire my TV for 2009 – not 2000.

But Els had it going, and it was a sight for sore eyes. He was en route to a gorgeous 66, making no bogeys and five birdies in his first 14 holes. He arrived at 16 in the thick of the hunt, but chose to play the 324-yard, par-4 hole conservatively, laying up off the tee when one of the Big Easy’s patented drives would set him up for birdie.

Gary McCord first-guessed the lay-up, and when Nick Faldo suggested that Ernie’s lay-up, wedge and green in regulation set him up for a birdie putt, Faldo offered that a made putt might “shut you up, Gary.” McCord answered, accurately, that not much could make him shut up.

Els missed the putt, and settled for par on a birdie hole. McCord kept talking, happily.

Given that Els’ striking and charismatic presence is hugely missed on golf leaderboards, and given that every chance we get to see that golf swing is a sporting privilege, and given that Els is probably the best combination of personality and talent among the world’s best players, and given that yours truly was rooting hard for Els to start a career comeback on the verge of his 40th birthday this October, let’s go back to that 16th tee, give Ernie a driver and … give that man a mulligan!

Broadcast moment of the week

• “I don’t remember him ever missing one.” – Jim Nantz, CBS, as the golf world tried to process the sight of Tiger missing a 6-foot putt on the 72nd hole to tie for the lead.

Such was the shock of Tiger missing an absolute do-or-die putt that even Nantz, who usually plays it cool and lays low and lets Faldo and David Feherty break down the key moments, had to chime in with his thought.

What Nantz was saying was, he doesn’t remember Tiger ever missing a putt of that length (a makeable 72 inches) in that situation (one shot off the lead) at that situation in a golf tournament (on the 72nd hole).

Considering Nantz has had his catbird-seat gig since Tiger turned pro in 1996, the statement carries some weight.

It was that kind of miss.

Where do we go from here?

• Get your BBQ aprons on – we have a Labor Day finish next Monday at TPC Boston for the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the Deutsche Bank Championship. The field of 125 has been trimmed to 100, and it figures to be must-see TV. After all, you can start your betting pool now: How long will the putt be that Tiger misses to win the tournament?

Just kidding, Tiger. Please still take my phone calls.

Roberts edges O’Meara to win Boeing

August 31, 2009

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP)—Walking up the 18th hole, Mark O’Meara couldn’t avoidthe giant video board replaying Loren Roberts’ tee shot on the 17th, his ballbouncing into the fringe behind the hole, somehow wiggling from the longer grassto gently slide 5 feet from the cup.

For the eighth time since joining the Champions Tour, O’Meara was stucksettling for second place.

Roberts made the short birdie putt on 17 to draw even with O’Meara, thensank a 3-foot birdie putt on the 18th to steal the Boeing Classic title Sundayand keep O’Meara winless on the Champions Tour.

Roberts finished at 18 under, thanks to a final-round 65 and a fortuitousbounce on 17 when the ball came out of the fringe and trickled its way towardthe hole.

“I saw it get a foot up into the fringe. It just goes to show you, and I’vesaid it when I’ve won, ‘Hey, it was my day. I got lucky.’ There is a lot ofskill involved but it’s all a matter of getting the right break at the righttime,” O’Meara said. “Who knows, maybe that ball could have stayed up there. But it doesn’t work that way and he’s got the trophy.”

Roberts won for the third time this season, adding to victories at the ACEGroup Classic and the Senior British Open last month.

O’Meara led by a shot until an untimely bogey on the short, par-4 16th whenhis second shot bounced on the lip of a bunker short of the green and fell backinto the sand. O’Meara rebounded with a birdie on the 17th, but could onlymanage a par on the par-5 18th when his tee shot found a fairway bunker.

Roberts took advantage. He nearly matched O’Meara’s sterling tee shot at 17,a shot that Roberts had been dreading all week. With water fronting the greenthe pin was placed in the back left corner. Roberts, who struggles withright-to-left shots, got his 5-iron to turn over just enough to catch a ridgeseparating the green.

But he didn’t see the ball hop into the fringe and pop free.

“That’s a tough pin for me to get at,” Roberts said. “I put probably thebest swing of the tournament for me. … For me to get into position was to makethe birdie at 17. I’d been thinking about that hole all week.”

Roberts then birdied the final hole with three solid shots. From 50 yardsout Roberts used a wedge and hit a low skip shot that landed on the fringe, checked up and rolled just a few feet from the cup. O’Meara was on the drivingrange prepping for a potential playoff when Roberts dropped his winning putt.

“I’m not going to say second is terrible because it’s not terrible,”O’Meara said. “But when you’ve come close as I have and not break through yet,and today could have been a great breakthrough day for me. Unfortunately I’llhave to wait until next week.”

Dan Forsman and Bernhard Langer finished tied for third place at 14 under.Hal Sutton made a huge charge, shooting a tournament-low round of 63 includingan eagle on the final hole. Sutton finished at 12 under and in fifth place.

Second-round co-leader Mark McNulty stumbled at the start with a four-puttfrom about 40 feet after reaching the par-5 first in two shots. McNulty shot a3-over 75 and finished in eighth place at 8 under.

Mike Mike Reid, from Westminster, M… AP – Aug 23, 7:28 pm EDT

Separated by one group, Roberts and O’Meara turned the final round into atwo-man match of O’Meara dropping birdies and Roberts matching.

O’Meara made nine birdies, including five on the back nine, with his onlyblemish coming at the 16th, part of an 8-under 64. But he still hasn’t won a PGATour sanctioned event since the 1998 British Open.

O’Meara made birdies at Nos. 6, 7, 8, then spun a fairway bunker shot to 6feet for a birdie at No. 10. He hit another stellar bunker shot at the 12th toabout 4 feet and another at the 210-yard par-3 13th, pushed O’Meara to 16 under.

But Roberts answered each charge, thanks to a putter that saw Roberts makejust one bogey Sunday—one of only two bogeys the entire tournament.

Roberts birdied Nos. 7 and 8, then saw his birdie putt on 10 do a 360 aroundthe hole and drop to get to 14 under. He pulled even with O’Meara at 15 underwith a birdie on the 12th and added another at the 13th, from the fringe, toreach 16 under.

Roberts hit just 23 putts in his round and nine on the closing nine holes. He also closed the gap with leader Fred Funk in the Charles Schwab Cup pointsrace. Roberts now trails by 86 points.

“No question I holed some putts there on the back nine,” Roberts said. “Imade some putts today, believe me.”
